Listened as an Audiobook on CD sometime between 2009-2014. I believe it was translated from Italian or German into English. I believe was part of a series, but I never read any of the other books.

Century series by Pierdomenico Baccalario seems to match your description. Book one is Ring of Fire. (Also, the kids all have birthdays on February 29, Leap Day.)
