J. P. {School Hiatus} (the-reluctant-feanorian) | 194 comments Close; I actually did read Beowulf (Tolkien’s translation :). The book I didn’t finish is Emma, which I’m planning to pick up again eventually.

message 154: by Bella (new)

Bella | 55 comments Oh, I have been wanting to read Tolkien's translation of it so badly! Was it good? And I love Emma, that is definitely one that needs finishing. :)

Out of those choices, I would have said Great Expectations. I found it terribly boring. Definitely get back to Emma! I loved it.😊 (I am acutally itching to reread it.)

Bella | 55 comments Great Expectations had me on the edge of my seat by the end! That one was so good, so many plot twists!

message 157: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Pachinko, The Goldfinch, and The Inheritance Games

message 158: by Ali (new)

Ali Noel Pachinko? That's the only one I haven't heard of

Yes, it was excellent! Its one downside is that its syntax can be rather complicated, so it’s not the most easily readable translation. I found that it was helpful to cross-reference with the Seamus Heaney version, which is somewhat simpler. :) And yes, I’m certainly going to read Emma again at some point!

Yes, the first few chapters of Great Expectations are probably the most interesting part of the book (though I did like all of it). :) I’ll likely try to find someone to do a buddy read of Emma, as I might need some motivation to finish it…I like but do not love Jane Austen. :)

✧Bella✧ | 6756 comments Sharon got it. Good job, Sharon. :)

And good guess, Bets, I added that one just to confuse anyone who actually knows anything about my reading preferences lol.

😂 it just seemed so “unlike” what I know about what you read that I was suspicious it wasn’t the unread one. But then i decided to go with it anyways. lol

Oh wait, this is one that’s been dnfed. Not just, not read. Interesting. The Girl Behind the Red Rope actually looks very interesting.

Yeah, tricking people was the point. I read it like three years ago, when my preferences were a little difference, although Amish romance was never a favorite genre of mine.

Yeah, I thought it looked interesting too, which is why I started it. But I didn't like the feeling it gave me. Hard to describe, and maybe I would feel differently now, as this was a couple of years ago, but I was no more than maybe five chapters in when I decided to dnf.

Was it kinda dark or what? I was looking at reviews after I saw you dnfed it and it looked like something I actually probably wouldn’t like.

message 181: by ✧Bella✧ (new)

✧Bella✧ | 6756 comments Yeah, it was pretty dark. And I can handle dark sometimes, but not the type of dark that this was, if that makes any sense. *shrugs*
