No it's not solved. I checked Pat Murphy books, they are great, but not this particular story. I may have to look into Brin books for this story...

I thought I was familiar with most of his stuff. Have double-checked, found this:

The "Out of Time" series (by various authors), does not seem to have any asteroid fun.
