I believe I read this book between 1985 and 1989. I am pretty sure it's where tween me learned the meaning of the word hart, re deer. Possibly hind, too, but I specifically remember hart. I may be conflating the phrase with the title. I think the Hart (and maybe Hind) was the name of an inn? That somehow a girl and boy who might be siblings are outdoors (in Autumn?) and then are back in medieval times being chased by a bad man on a horse? This is all very fuzzy, but it was a smart and good book and I so want to find it. It's even remotely possible this is all in a magical version of history, not a time travel thins, but I feel fairly sure the kids are from the modern day. Thank you all so much for any suggestions.

The man on the horse was some harsh arrogant nobleman, I believe.I do not recall the author's sex but I am leaning toward female. I believe the author wrote other YA fantasy books.
