YA book where girl falls for delinquent?/outcast guy, read it in highschool so between 2009-2012

The book is set in Australia or Britain I believe

A girl gets paired up with an outcast guy for a school project, or maybe it was a play but not sure. I remember a scene where she visits his house for the project and shows her a door (or table?) that was made of resin and had like a bunch of live (now dead of course) gold fish in it, the door was made by the boys older brother as a gift for their mother.
