read between 2000-2008. hero gets turned into a baby by a wizard to prevent the hero from outwitting him in a chess game. involves action sequences. a kingdom separated from desolate place by a magic wall. the desolate place has time pockets that move faster/slower. The hero had humble beginnings though I don't remember specifically what they were, though he gets involved with protecting a kingdom and seems to learn skills pretty quickly. If you haven't read it, I don't want to spoil what I remember as being a big reveal. I remember REALLY enjoying this book and would like to go back and read it.

I just remembered that the more time people spend in the "desolate place" (probably not called that in the book) the more they mutate away from normal human forms.
