Nyanekos | 2 comments The genre may not be dystopia and may be fantasy but what I know for definite is there was a scene wherein the lowest level of their society was living practically in the mud and there was descriptions of them going into it. I dont believe there was more than 5 children protagonists and that the societys rankings were represented by various colours. I believe it was part of a trilogy or series but I did not read the others.. Before 2013 because I read this in high school on loan so memory is very foggy sorry, the cover was definitely burgandy/brown and had a circular thing either a emblem or ringlet or something in the middle. Thank you and sorry for inconvenience.

Angela Johnson | 96 comments Ok, so the cover is not what you describe but Red Rising by Pierce Brown kind of fits the description. It's a series, it's dystopian. Societal rankings by color, etc.

This cover seems to fit your description, and from what I remember, there is colour coded clothing.

I think it is The Wind Singer. It matches in several ways. It’s the first book in a dystopian fantasy trilogy. Society is split into levels which are colours - grey, orange, maroon, etc. The lowest group are the mud people who live in the Underlake - the 3 MCs (all children) go down to the Underlake, get stuck in the mud and have to be rescued.
