The Counterfeit Secretary
Tempt Me Not
Deal of a Lifetime"
Thank you, Shavar! Susan Napier's head over heels heroes and sense of humor is where I should have looked first. Embarrassingly haven't read much from her but loved what I have read. Will check these out.

they fit the bill....

She catches on and clarifies a few pages later (but in typical H fashion he doesn't believe her, lol) but I am a sucker for these kinds of misunderstandings and the trope where people are having wildly different interpretations of the conversation based on a misunderstanding. Is there a story where the h catches on the H's asshole assumption BUT leans into them and toys with him for humorous effect?
Or literally any Harley where the has-a-backbone-of-some-kind h is playing a (humorous) cat-and-mouse with a (*fingers crossed* head-over-heels, smitten) grumpy H? I'm thinking along the lines of Obsession by Charlotte Lamb. Doesn't need to be a straight romance either.
Small edit: If anyone is also a classic movie fan, a movie example would be 5th Ave Girl (1939). Although the misunderstanding is pretty deliberately orchestrated, she really taunts the guy while she's at it.
