I read it 5-6 years ago, i remember part 3 being published and then I havent heard about the book since, am excited to see where it ended.
Some more details/spoilers: the main character's animal was some kind of a special Hedgehog that was used later to make some kind of a weapon. The archmage started as very weak boy, then got into some scary magic, was able to deceive big demon enemy and exctracted the biggest archmage that ever lived from his body (using some toxin?). I stopped reading after big demon enemy attacked the school of magic, he succeeded to do that and stole headmaster's ring
