► UNSOLVED: One specific book > Childrens Fantasy. Scratch & sniff book. Pop-ups of magical castles with a trunk in attic that leads to another world. Children wear different things from the trunk. Whimsical illustrations. British? Read in late 1990's.

Ash (shnu) | 5 comments I've tried googling this every year or so to no avail. I re-found it over a decade ago and then lost all the info again. I read it as a child during the late 90's and it was most likely published in the 90's or late 80's.
I remember: A greenish/maybe blue cover. Pop-ups of magical castles. Very whimsical illustrations. Scratch and sniff smells. Children trying on things from a trunk in an attic that maybe transports them to this other fairy world. Maybe a fairy queen or something similar?
It might be British since my mom is british and would pick up books from the airport for me.

Thank you but it's not either of these - This book had more modern, whimsical illustrations which is why I think it was 90's. If I saw the cover again I would definitely recognize it. You'd think there be some kind of list of children's scratch and sniff books but I can't find anything like that :'(

Oh and will do on the bumping!

Whambamboozle by Jason Page Whambamboozle by Jason Page?

Description on Worldcat.org:
Finding a way into the castle is easy, but will you find a way out? Each page presents pop-ups and holograms, sounds and smells, all leading to a monstrous surprise. Before you can turn each page, you must find the key hidden somewhere in the room.

One Amazon reviewer says: "A very exciting book visually, "Whambamboozle" has almost too much to look at! The illustrations appear to be composed using several computer programs, and they are dazzling, but the computer's ability to pile on information results in images that are sometimes too busy to comprehend, with no central subject to focus on. The pull-tab mechanisms, too, are difficult to operate (and very easy to damage!), and are sometimes so well-hidden that the search can be irritating. Having said all that, I still love the book for its stylish brashness, its many fun surprises, such as a tiny, pull-out "Revolting Recipes" book; ghoulish sound effects (really!); a scratch & sniff pot of... what IS that Smell?; a hologram eyeball, a jumping spider, etc., etc. I recommend it for bright kids over 10 years and any adults who appreciate a funny gross-out and sometimes exceptional-looking paper engineering."
