I read this book before the year 2000. The premise of the book was that cats were aliens who first came to Earth during Ancient Egyptian times, which is why they were worshipped by humans back then. Cats who stayed on Earth became pets of humans and forgot their space origins. In modern times, a cat returns from space to collect the descendants who still retain certain abilities (I believe telepathy) because Earth is about to be destroyed, so they are rescuing as many cats as they can. This cat ends up befriending two human children and takes them with him when he leaves the planet, so they will be the only survivors of the human species.
