This was a book assigned to me in junior high and was most likely published in the '90s (possibly the '80s). It concerns the childhood of a young boy named Mehmet (I believe) who is aged 10-13 years old. My memories of the plot are scarce, but it's definitely rooted in realism. There is also a character named Hakan, another child who he is somewhat at odds with and possibly a bully.
