SOLVED. Genre: Children’s Plot: Kitten who gets lost and is looking for a home. [s]

The main character was either a calico kitten or an orange kitten…I’m pretty sure it was a calico kitten. I believe at some point the kitten needed to be rescued from a tree or a fire or some other type of life or death situation, I believe the cover of the book also included a tree. There was also a fireman in the book, I believe he rescued the kitten and adopted it at the end. I think I also remember the kitten sleeping in the fireman’s helmet towards the end.

The book was illustrated. My parents used to read it to me in the early 90s. We lived in California (USA) in the city of Diamond Bar. It did not seem like an old book at the time, the illustrations were colorful. The time period of the book was present day (I believe).. I don’t think there was a set location but I can not remember. It was a printed paper book (I can not remember if it was soft or hard cover…I’m leaning towards soft cover). It wasn’t a long book, my parents were able to finish the book in one bedtime story sitting. The book was in English.

Any and all help that could lead me to one of my favorite childhood books would be appreciated!

Description: A fireman rescues a little kitten over and over and finally decides to take it home to live with him.

It says I can't add external links in the comment but if you do a search of Google images you can see pictures of the cover. One edition has a calico cat (I think) on a tree and a fireman climbing on a ladder to get to the kitten.

If it's any help, the only editions I can bring up for this book show the author, for some reason, as Luke, Melinda.
