Hark! It's time to save the princess from the vast variety of monsters that are keeping her trapped in the castle.

This week, you will read books that will help you slay these monsters. There are a wide variety of monsters, each with different weaknesses, so make sure you are slaying the most you can to accrue points and win favor from the queen!

How It Works:
Read books to fulfill the prompts and slay monsters. When each monster is slayed, you will earn that monster's badge and points. You can attack multiple monsters at a time, and you can slay multiples of the same monster (except for the elusive sphinx!). You can also log your pages to attack those pesky harpies. Your battle strategy is up to you!

For more information and to ask questions, see our Introduction and FAQs thread.

Spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Each tab will help you track the monsters you slay. Use the tabs to fill in books, pages read, and audio hours listened that you have already completed. Use the planning tab to track books-in-progress and hopeful books. Your queen (me!) will be watching those spreadsheets to see when you've successfully vanquished the monsters.

Hi everyone, Welcome to Team Narnia! Probably the first magical kingdom I ever read about.

I have a few books in mind. It looks like the spreadsheet isn't yet set up for us to enter things, I'm checking with Emily about it.

Dragons - 4 - a book with a red cover
Sphinx - 4 - a protagonist who solves problems
Wraiths -3 - a short book (a lot of us will have this one)

I forgot to change the settings on the spreadsheet. You should be able to edit them as a group now. Sorry about that!

message 6: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments Greetings fellow quester. I’m just back from a trip to Warwick Castle for a fourth birthday so should be well versed in all things chivalrous.

I seem to have a wholly unsuitable set of books put aside but will start with Mortal Causes which has a green cover (or black and white cover with green writing, depending how you look at it Mortal Causes by Ian Rankin ) and also involves a death and puzzle-solving.

message 7: by Miriam (new)

Miriam | 72 comments Good morning!
My first read-a-thon and I am ready to start! The books I have put aside for it will probably at least fill some of the prompts. Will start reading now :-)

message 8: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2994 comments Good morning Team Narnia! I think we should try and rehabilitate these monsters, but we'll just tell the queen we definitely killed them.

I need to go work out my TBR for the week, but I do want to tick off a black and white for Popsugar.

message 9: by Miriam (new)

Miriam | 72 comments Dear team,

I have finished my first book, a short book (192 pages).
Hier geht´s lang

We could use it for the short book, obviously (Wraith 3). But we could also use it for the character who has a pet (Sphinx 2). It is not fictional, but the author has a dog and mentions that several times during the book and there is also a photo of her with the dog in the book.

Great set-up, mods. Although being a dragon fan (and a Chinese dragon) I'm a bit sad that we have to kill them :(

Narnia was the first magical kingdom I remember, too. I read the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at school when I was 12, and then went home and discovered that we had a complete set of the books - I still have it upstairs, with a replacement Last Battle, as the edition in the slipcase had pages missing/repeated.

I'm starting the RAT on what my kindle calls page 138 of 385pg of
Axiom's End (Noumena #1) by Lindsay Ellis .

It's an alternate history about alien first contact, but sadly we don't seem to have an aliens or SF prompt to fill.

At the moment, the thing it best seems to fit is Dragon 4, given the cover. I'll need to carry on reading to see where else it may go (I suspect there will be character death, for a start).

If it doesn't seem to fit any of the others, I have plenty of other books in the starting gate.

message 11: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Morning Team Narnia. I'm so excited to start the Read-A-Thon. I'm reading Shelter Mountain (Virgin River, #2) by Robyn Carr It will fit Ogres 200 points set in a rural town or Dragons 250 points source of light on the cover. I'm leaning toward the higher points. I stopped reading last night with 110 pages left so I should finish today.

message 12: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Lourenço (ssandraa) | 180 comments Hello team!! I have a busy day ahead but I will try to get some reading done tonight.

I'm currently reading Tower of Dawn which would work for the Ogre prompt 3. A giant book (500+ pages)

message 13: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2994 comments I read The Empress of Salt and Fortune this morning and have put it down under ogres #4 (am assuming normal rules apply and we can ignore the "the").

I might start on my black and white book next, which is Lanny.

message 14: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 4026 comments Mod
Great to see all the enthusiasm! I say we can rehabilitate and tame the dragons instead of killing them. We would still rescue the princess, and The dragons could be very useful for riding home on, starting fires for us in the wilderness, and so on.

Any book where you still have at least 100 pages to go counts for the game.

Yes, you can ignore "a", "and", and "the" in titles. I love that you have "Empress" in a game about royalty.

message 16: by Miriam (new)

Miriam | 72 comments Hello again :-)

I have really started well in to the read-a-thon. Have finished reading a second book :-) and have included both the books I finished today in the spreadsheet.
Madame Moneypenny: Wie Frauen ihre Finanzen selbst in die Hand nehmen können

message 17: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2994 comments I finished Lanny which I've put down for black and white cover as I thought that might be one of the harder prompts to fill.

message 18: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments I finished Shelter Mountain (Virgin River, #2) by Robyn Carr. I put it under Dragons a book with a source of light on the cover. Shelter Mountain (Virgin River, #2) by Robyn Carr

Irene (irene5) | 921 comments Hi team!! I'm late to the party but happy to help rehabilitate dragons :D

(So annoyed that I just finished Thunderhead the day before yesterday - it's partially set in Egypt! Ahhh)

So far, I plan to read:
Bitterblue (Dragons #5 or Ogres #3)
Dead Until Dark (Sphinx #1 or Ogres #2)
The Unhoneymooners (Sphinx #5)
and Silver in the Wood, which works for Wraiths #3, although I don't know if we have too many for that one! Will update after reading the book since I don't know yet if it'll fulfill any other prompts.

Do you all think Bitterblue counts as alliteration?

message 20: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments Hello All! Excited to be part of Team Narnia. Just yesterday I read this quote from Susanna Clarke, author of Piranesi that just won the Woman's Prize for Fiction: "Anyone who’s read Narnia as a child is constantly aware that they have that desire – one day, there will be the wardrobe." Here's the article she was quoted in if anyone else is interested in reading what she overcame to write the book: https://www.theguardian.com/books/202...

Anyways, I finished reading The Maidens today and put it under Banshee for A book featuring the death of a character.

Great job, everyone! I have put the completed books in the Completed tab under the categories that seemed to be what you intended. If they aren't correct, feel free to move them. I show we have finished 7 books already!

Please also enter your pages and/or hours listened in the first tab.

message 22: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments I finished Mortal Causes which I think works best for green cover. I should be able to update the spreadsheet later but may need a hand with this as we go along. I need to borrow a laptop every time as my mobile device won’t play ball.

I’m about to start Ending Up in the expectation that Brigadier Bernard Bastable will be a fiery character.

I only managed 95pg of Axiom's End yesterday, but I'll try to do better today.

message 24: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Good Morning Team Narnia. I'm reading Whispering Rock (Virgin River, #3) by Robyn Carr . Unfortunately the cover has buildings on it not a woman with long hair. I won't finish today but will log pages read tonight. We had a great start can't wait to see how we do today.

message 25: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2994 comments Greetings fellow monster hunters! I'm a bit getting round to reading today since our long dog walk ended up 9 miles thanks to a couple of detours. I need a lie down! I plan to carry on with Green Rising today.

message 26: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments I realized that the edition of Whispering Rock I was reading did have a woman with long hair on it. Whispering Rock A Virgin River Novel by Robyn Carr .

message 27: by Karissa (new)

Karissa | 440 comments I finished reading I'd Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life and put it down for a book with alliteration.

Robin P | 4026 comments Mod
No judgment, anyone! This is for fun and whatever you read is great! I am always surprised how competitive I am. When I did my first Read-a-thon, I was surprised that there were no team prizes or even an announcement of all the scores. But that isn't the point. We are happy to have everyone on the team.

message 31: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 921 comments Sorry for being so slow! Weekends are my busiest days of the week so I'm off to a reallyyyy slow start. But I started Bitterblue and will finish it tomorrow for sure, and then start my next book!

message 32: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments So Ending Up was dreadful. I’m seriously considering putting it in the recycling rather than the Little Free Library. It doesn’t even have a fiery character. While most of the ensemble cast behave horribly, they are decidedly cold fish. I’ll pencil it in for a title starting with a letter in Norbert later today but anyone can move it if that makes more sense.

I should be on safer ground with my next read Crocodile on the Sandbank which is partly set in Egypt.

P.s. would anyone consider Olive Kitteridge to be a fiery character? I have Olive, Again to hand.

message 33: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Lourenço (ssandraa) | 180 comments Hello team! I finished Tower of Dawn last night, I added it to the giant book prompt.

message 34: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments Great to have the giant prompt ticked off. I seem to have a slew of 480 page books around but nothing longer that wouldn’t take all week.

message 35: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2994 comments Good work Sandra! I want to read Empire of the Vampire but didn't put it on my readathon TBR because it's a beast that I wasn't sure I could even finish in a week!

I've decided to change tack and try reading a couple of quicker books before going back to Axiom's End.

So, I've finished Arrivals and Arrests first, and as it has the main page genre Fantasy > Paranormal, I've popped it in for Wraiths 1. There are one or two others it might fit we you want it to go somewhere else.

Would people say this cover is green, or black and white with a sepia tone?

Whodunit? by Norma Seely

I'm also adding The Tropic of Serpents into the reading plan for the week, as it covers Harpy 6 - Mythological creature - and we don't seem to have any others in the plan for that prompt.

Yes, I would say Olive Kitteridge is fiery.

message 40: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2994 comments I'm not much help, I keep changing my mind on whether my current book cover is green or not. I'd say it looks more brown than green.

message 41: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 614 comments No, I’m not getting green either I’m afraid..

I am, however, among a wealth of fiery characters with Amelia Peabody and her acquaintances though Crocodile on the Sandbank is probably still more useful for its Egyptian setting.

It's weird - colour is something that's so much in the eye of the beholder. I'll not try to fit it to a colour. There are a couple of other places it works.

I didn't know either, but a right click gave me the option to insert a column, so I inserted about 10 more. I assume you meant under the Plans tab, but this should work for any of them.

I have finished The Empty House, page numbers can be so misleading - this one is 249 pages but the print is big and the pages small, I'm sure it took less than 2 hours to read the whole thing!

message 48: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments Great work team. We are doing great. Love the meme Ellie. My first check in today. I was focused on finishing Whispering Rock (Virgin River, #2) by Robyn Carr. There are a few spots I can put it. Brie is fiery but there was discussion about Olive Kitteridge going under dragons so I throught I would see what everyone thought. Also it can go under a book with a person with long hair on the cover. Also it is set in a rural town so you all let me know where to put it.
