That's it! Thank you so much, I can't believe I forgot about the whole glove thing...(The Lost Children by Carolyn Cohagan)
A girl (around ten to thirteen) is at a house (possibly her grandfather's) and finds an opening to another world in the garden shed. Or she's summoned, I just remember it happened in a garden.
She goes to a urban fantasy world, where's some sort of evil threat, likely involving a king, and she befriends a boy about her age and his father, who are both street sweepers.
