Jude Saint | 2 comments Hi all. I’m after the name or author of a book series I read at school in the 1980s. It was a pulpy sci-fi about a planet (I think was earth) taken over by an alien species. Humans were slaves along with other species that I think were kind of wookie like in appearance. The main character escapes and makes friends with one of these hairy aliens and they each get one of the aliens tubular laser guns. They go on some adventures, rescue people, something about a train at one stage etc. That’s about all I have to go on. I’m pretty certain it isn’t Battlefield Earth, but that’s about all I have to go on. Hairy alien friend, tube guns, weird conquering aliens, humans as slaves. Hope someone remembers.

Jude, you must add plot details to your header, which is vague right now. We close threads with vague headers. You can copy and paste from what you've written there.

Alan (alanjc) | 478 comments Slight possibility is the Warriors of the Wasteland trilogy by Douglas Arthur Hill, published in the 1980s. Humans have been enslaved by an alien species (weedy, hairless) after an apocalypse, and are kept under control by a vicious, hairy humanoid species. The (human) main character teams up with a friendly renegade hairy guard. At various times, one or both have tubular laser guns.

The first book is called The Huntsman, but appears on Goodreads as Die Jagter, and can be found on Open Library. The next is Creatures Of The Claw, which is on Open Library as Warriors of the Wasteland. Third book is Alien Citadel.

Google Books preview of The Huntsman by Douglas Arthur Hill - Alan's suggestion:

https://books.google.com/books?id=HXd... There are different cover images.

Quotes from the book:
- Josh and others had spoken on the heatlance, the long and murderous tube that had burned down so many humans. But this Slaver carrier nothing in its...
- But his thumb slid into a shallow groove in the smooth metal near one end of the tube. The lancetip crackled, and a tight beam of energy sprang from the...
- The beastman squinted into the interior of the tube. "Charge run out," he said. "An' just as well, for me. Got any spares?" Finn looked puzzled, and shook...
