Fiction: Book about correspondence / letter between a mother with some guy who has believed killed her son. Spoiler ahead.

I looking for a book, I've read long time ago. The plot is:

This is about correspondence / letter between a mother with some guy who has believed killed his son. This guy was the son's bestfriend, and now waiting for death penalty because this case.

The interesting plot is later discovered, that the victim (son) is killed by his own father because his gay sexual tendency with this guy who believed as the killer.

And at the end this guy still faced death penalty, even after the facts that he's not the killer due to several law procedure (which i could not remember completely). This is completely broken the mother.

The son (victim) only about 12 years old when he killed and his bestfriend is little older like 16.

I could clearly remember that this event is happened in US. As the story often mention federal court etc. I read it in Indonesia, however i pretty sure that this book originally written in English.

Please your commend and help me. I really need to reread this again

I could clearly remember that this event is happened in US. As the story often mention federal court etc. I read it in Indonesia, however i pretty sure that this book originally written in English.

Unfortunately the i did not know the time it was written, but i think it's pretty old before 2000s i think.

One clue i remember is the son (victim) only about 12 years old when he killed and his bestfriend is little older like 16.

The Crying Tree seems to match somewhat, but it's published 2009.
