SOLVED. ghost chldren? *spoilers* [s]

I read a series(?) out of order by mistake. I read this in 5th grade so children's chapter book.

siblings, boy and girl. "live" by pond or lake. can only go to after life if they figure out how they died (how they ended up drowning?). dog might have shown up later in the book. Can't go far away from pond.

the mystery of the haunted pool isn't right. the kids where definitely dead.

i sorta kinda remember they cover. it might have been night time. and I think they kids where running but I'm not sure.
