Probably YA fiction. Main character gets tasks/ riddles to solve, one of the tasks is to read only the first page of "Lord of the Flies." Read 2000-2011.

I mainly read young adult books, which is why I think it's probably the case in this one too. So it might not be YA.
The main character gets tasks to solve, I don't remember from where or how, I think pages in books maybe? One of the tasks are related to reading the first page of Lord of the Flies, the character get's so into the book they read at least the first chapter. They get told no, read the first page, and only the first page to solve the riddle/task.

I read this book sometime between 2000 and 2011, but I can't say when it was written.

I feel fairly certain it's not mystery or thriller. It's a LONG time since I read this, but I would guess it fits in our world and might as well just be any city in USA. The feeling I remember is that the character grew a lot mentally in the book.

The book comes to mind when I think of "Sophie's world" which is a philosophical book with a girl coming to age.
