Char | 17459 comments Here is the discussion spot for The Elementals by Michael McDowell by Michael McDowell. Please be careful of spoilers and happy reading!

Char | 17459 comments Stupid Goodreads wouldn't post the newer cover, only the one that has been out of print forever.

Frances Carden | 60 comments Just bought this! Super excited for this one. I'm very much in the beach-horror mood.

Char | 17459 comments Welcome to hot and humid Beldame!

Rob Sharp | 74 comments I tried this book once but bounced off it pretty hard . Worth a re-try?

Char | 17459 comments Definitely! (And if not this one, perhaps his Blackwater books or The Amulet or Gilded Needles?)
He is a terrific writer-in my top of 5 for sure.

Ami Morrison | 234 comments Yes! :D I love this book ( and author)! I’ve been wanting to re-read it again!

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I just started Elementals and really looking forward to getting into the novel. I liked The Amulet and the Blackwater series, so I think that this will be just as fun to get into.

Char | 17459 comments Even though I have the book, I think I'm going to listen to it this time around.

Steven (ivory88) | 1 comments For fans of McDowell, Suntup Press will be announcing their next book on August 12th. All the clues point to it being Blackwater. If so, it's going to be a spectacular edition.

Nothing but spectacular editions from Suntup, that's for sure. I didn't know this, so I'll be on the look out for it. Blackwater is my favorite from McDowell, but I love them all. And I do think I've read them all, except, perhaps, for ones written under the name Axl something or other, I think it was.

Lisa | 620 comments I've been wanting to read this one for a long time - so excited to do so with the group :)

One of my personal favorite novels ever.... along with most of McDowell's other books!

Justin Hall | 8 comments Awesome! I just started this last week.

It's a terrific story, hope you read it Frances.

Netanella | 572 comments I'm excited for this, it's been a long-term TBR.

JasonA (jasonaa) I read this last month and liked it a lot. One of the best haunted house books I've read.

Char | 17459 comments I'm listening to the audiobook, is anyone else?

I'm at the point where they've reached Beldame and does anyone (view spoiler)

We're on the same schedule, but this would be a re-read for me, Elementals is a gem. I'm legit jealous of first time readers.

message 30: by Char (new) - rated it 5 stars

Char | 17459 comments Some of the dialogue here just cracks me up, especially conversations between Big Barbara, India and Luker.
I adore Luker.

Well this makes me very excited to give it a go then! I’m currently reading both the Hendrix and the King because I couldn’t not start reading the new King straight away once it was in my hands lol

McDowell writes southern families like no other.

I'm so tempted to start it right away, I've never done that with a new release before, reading it the day it comes out and def not with King, but I might this time :)

McDowell was a master of that.

I got a really nice edition from Centipede Press last year. I'm glad I got it when I did because it sold out. It was this one:

Starting my re-read today!!

message 41: by Char (new) - rated it 5 stars

Char | 17459 comments I'm sad. I just passed the 1 hour left on the audio mark. I even delayed listening earlier today because I just don't want it to end.

Even though this is my third time, I just love this story, I don't think I'll ever tire of it.

Lena | 2673 comments I’ve finished chapter 12, the man takes my breath away with his bone deep knowledge of the South:

“Worry, clever thought, conversation all were crushed by the weight of the atmosphere.”

“He did nothing, he thought of nothing; he didn’t even bother to feel guilty that he was not working.”

If you had ever opened your front door at 6AM to find that it’s already 80° at 90% humidity, you would understand.

message 44: by Char (new) - rated it 5 stars

Char | 17459 comments I think that atmosphere, that suffocating humidity, is so well written and mentioned so often, it's actually one of the characters.
