SOLVED. YA?/Fantasy. Boy (possibly prince) along with another boy each find dragon eggs. Boy/Prince then flees kingdom on a boat or raft through a cave. [s]

OK. So I think I read this book sometime around 1989-1991. I'm fairly certain it takes place in a fantasy type world. The main character is a boy, maybe a prince, and he goes into an area with this other boy who I think is an apprentice to a wizard. They each find a dragon egg. Later the prince has to run away from the kingdom for some reason. The apprentice doesn't go with him. The prince has to take a boat or raft through a cave that has monsters in it and I'm sure at some point there's a whirlpool.
I've ben trying to remember the name of this book for 20 years now and everyone has no idea what I'm talking about.

I think the dragon hatches at the end when the main character exits the cave.

was it a dragon boat? could be one of the Septimus Heap (Seventh Son) books by Angie Sage and Mark Zug. remembered which one in the series it might be, try Magyk. ah! i just noticed the time frame is off, as this was published in 2011. best of luck

I think this is the book from my childhood that I've been trying to remember. Do you know if it included a cave with maybe a stream that they had to maneuver?
