Liz | 2 comments I'm trying to find a picture book I read between 2003 and 2008. The plot is basically the Hades/Persephone myth. A princess is born, and is immediately threatened by a sorcerer/magician (he's bald, I think, and wears a dark, hooded cloak) who comes from another world though a magical ring of fire that appears in the air. He wants to take the baby away, but is prevented when she is given a magic silver ring, which protects her from him and his magic. She has to wear the ring constantly, or she will be abducted.

The princess grows up, still always wearing the ring (I think she might not know why she has to keep it on). One day she out is picking strawberries (maybe simply berries?) in the woods. When she's washing the juice off her hands in a stream, the ring slips from her finger. The sorcerer appears at once and takes her away through the ring of fire to his realm: a very cold and dark place where he lives alone in a castle or palace made of ice and rock - it is dark, miserable, jagged, and primitive. The princess is very unhappy about all this... I remember the rest only vaguely. I believe the princess softens the sorcerer's icy heart, and she ends up agreeing to come live with him for half or a third of every year. There's a picture of them sitting by the fire together in his castle; she is wrapped in furs and maybe reading a book.

I don't remember anything about the title or author. It's illustrated in a similar style to Charles Mikolaycak's "Tam Lin" - beautiful and fairly realistic. However, I remember things like the sorcerer's cloak, the ring of fire, and the ice in the castle having a more abstract, stained-glass-window look. The spine and edges of the binding are a grayish lilac. The cover might have had a picture on it, or it might have been blank and the dust jacket was missing. Thank you for any help you can give!
