YA futuristic/dystopian book series. Told from the perspective of a boy who leaves the civilization- maybe is forced out- to live with a group of boys who work the land somewhere. Spoilers ahead.

The boy travels through a dangerous area to get away from where he is working through a forest and discovers a cache of hidden books and papers left behind by a group who lived there at some point. The boy meets a girl and they end up travelling back to the civilization and some point. An illness and vaccines play a role at some point. The series is very much reminiscent of The Giver.
