Evan Stein | 9 comments A book read in about 1983 (could be from the 1970s)

Key memory is that there is part of the book where the main character is going out on a boat with her crush and her friend fixes her hair like in the magazines.

How old is the girl in the story?

Is this book for kids, teens, or adults?

Evan Stein | 9 comments It was a teenage girl.

She was wearing a particular outfit to go out in the boat with the boy. It was the first time my wife had heard of the outfit and thinks it may have been “bell bottoms” and a “sailor top”

She thinks the boy may have been rich or at least richer than the girl who liked him.

"Mmmm," said Beth, obviously not really turned on by the subject. She proceeded to change it to one of more crucial importance—what she should wear tomorrow night when Jimmy took her to the drive-in. Should she wear the green-striped shift that made her hips look like battleships or the navy bell-bottoms she'd worn with him twice already? Beth thought it over for a minute and then announced that she was going to wear the bell-bottoms."

"Beth brought a ton of beauty magazines and a whole suitcase full of little vials and jars and tubes of things when she came to visit me at the lake, and we are going to make a study of our beauty problems and do something about them. Our Bible is the June issue of Allure magazine, which is devoted to creating "A New Summer Beautygirl: You." I hardly know where to start, my beauty problems are so many and varied. But Beth is doing pretty well at mastering hers. She has only been here three days and already has a date with a boy she met at the beach. Of course, she doesn't have my hair problems. Hers is coarse and naturally curly and the magazines say the only hope is to wear it short and wash it all the time."

Rainbowheart | 28711 comments Haha, glad to help out!

These are all pretty popular books from that era. If she has more, feel free to post! I consider '70s and '80s kidlit my area of expertise, lol.
