I suppose spoilers ahead???
I am looking for a book i read during my elementary school years, so 1996-2000.
Art style: all the people were dogs, drawn rather realistically??? It looked like paintings i remember.

Setting: the beach. I think it was cape cod, massachusetts?? Maybe rhode island??? I have no idea....

Type: it was a thin book with a thin soft cover with a cover on it. I remember ripping the cover to it when i read it in my elementary school library and crying. I dont know if all of them have it.
Description: It is a children's sort of picture book about a stray cat trying to find where he belongs, trying places and people(the dog people) and losing parts of his 9 lives. Like he gets run over by a bike and loses one, later he is working in an ice cream store and falls into a vat of ice cream and loses a life, and another i think he gets stepped on by a dancer???
But in the end a bad storm comes and he is washed out to sea, down to his last cat life and he is found by a man(dog) in a boat and his cat. They bring him back to the lighthouse island, nurse him back to health and he finds the place he was meant to live was with the cat and lighthouse keeper.
