Discussion of HR and other books. And recs.

This takes place somewhere in the not too distant future when climate change has changed the world in drastic ways. Air conditioning is rare, people are poor and food is expensive.
Perilous Times

Let me know what you think of the Tracy Sumner series.
I am finding it a hard read. She seems to write the story then goes off on to to much description . Then back to other characters for the next book (Confusing). Shame as the characters for the story’s are okay. Story’s could have been better as the plots for the story seemed okay.
Still reading them as part of my mad about a series challenge.
Reading book 3 at the moment. Going to have a break from series Will get back later.
Good and bad reviews for this series.

2 women jump time and switch bodies? That would be a stretch
for me."
HR-ML, I've read the 2 books in that series too. It is a stretch, but I just went with it. The woman is a detective - not real young - in her time. There is a Jack-the-Ripper type bad guy out and she hears a girl scream in an alley. It is very foggy. Somehow she ends up in the girl's body in an alley in the late 1800's. She lucks up, is mistaken for the real girl, and therefore has a place to live. The girl is in service there, and pleading that she has lost her memory covers up her many mistakes.
It's an interesting and entertaining series. She works a lot with her employer's half-brother, a black man who prepares bodies for funerals.

Thanks for info. Sounds like you enjoyed these books."
They aren't as good as say, any mysteries by Mary Stewart, but they are interesting, readable, and well-researched. There is a tiny, tiny hint of romance in the time-switch book but so tiny I'm not sure I'm just looking for it. ETA that funerals in England at that time were interesting and surprising.
I had all of Mary Stewart's books in paperback and just bought this ebook on sale for 99 cents. Her books about Merlin were wonderful.

I did. I started reviewing regularly for NetGalley about 4 years ago, and have overall enjoyed it. Occasionally I requested a dud but not often. I've read books I would not have otherwise have ever tried. All it costs is your time and an honest review.
I just read this book which I thought was a children's book but it actually isn't. It was fantastic. It is a cartoon book about some of the author's experiences starting as a child, and a lot of it is about how his mixed race shaped his experiences growing up. He is a cartoonist for major newspapers and won the Pulitzer Prize for his cartoons about our favorite politician, Donald Trump.
It's still available to request....

Kelley Armstrong has a mystery also available for request. The one I wrote about is publishing tomorrow but may be still available to request for awhile.

NetGalley also has a section on politics. Hillary Clinton's new book is available for request.

"In 1872, sixteen-year-old Goes First, a Crow Native woman, marries Abe Farwell, a white fur trader. He gives her the name Mary, and they set off on the long trip to his trading post in the Cypress Hills of Saskatchewan, Canada. Along the way, she finds a fast friend in a Métis named Jeannie; makes a lifelong enemy in a wolfer named Stiller; and despite learning a dark secret of Farwell’s past, falls in love with her husband.
The winter trading season passes peacefully. Then, on the eve of their return to Montana, a group of drunken whiskey traders slaughters forty Nakota—despite Farwell’s efforts to stop them. Mary, hiding from the hail of bullets, sees the murderers, including Stiller, take five Nakota women back to their fort. She begs Farwell to save them, and when he refuses, Mary takes two guns, creeps into the fort, and saves the women from certain death. Thus, she sets off a whirlwind of colliding cultures that brings out the worst and best in the cast of unforgettable characters and pushes the love between Farwell and Crow Mary to the breaking point."

However, I feel, obliged to yell with glee about a newsletter I received today from Anna Cowan. Her second HR is with a publisher for approval. Hurrah! She says that it has taken her five years to write it and that it’s just as good as her number 1.

Ten years since Untamed was first published, it has finally happened! I have a new historical romance out on submission. It took me five years to write, and I can confidently say it has all the romantic intensity, complex characters and gender-queerness of Untamed. You will not be disappointed.
In order to launch this second beginning, I’m giving my website a massive update, so keep an eye on this space in the coming weeks. It’s really pretty.
I will also be starting a monthly newsletter you can subscribe to on the new site, where I will share publication news, events and recommendations. I will be cross-posting the content to the website. None of the current blog content will be coming with me.
I look forward to seeing you over there.

Thanks for the Genevieve Planche rec. Got them as well.
Thanks also to whoever recommended the Cara Devlin Bow Street/Duchess series. Bought them. Not bad.
I can’t remember who asked here, over the past few days, for KU recommendations, in particular. The four Alex Halsey titles by Lucinda Brant are currently available on KU. Over the years OLT and I have agreed to disagree about Brant’s writing style. I’m a dedicated fan (of all her titles, I only dislike one) and, while the Salt Herndon books will always be my favourite, I do recommend the Halsey series. Don’t expect a light read. Brant’s style is dense and crammed with historical detail. I enjoy it and admire her dedication to excellent research, but it is not to everyone’s taste.
Finally, Brant’s recent releases of novelettes that expand on the early days of Roxton’s marriage to Antonia, are all available on KU.
Hope this helps.
Feast or famine with me, isn’t it?

I thought I had that book (Untamed) but it wasn't in my library. :( I don't completely trust Amazon not to delete books not only from their catalog but from their customer's libraries - although they say they don't do that.

Then went to my Kindle, searched Library by title and was able to download the book. But it doesn't seem to be on offer by Amazon that I can see?

Then w..."
Ah, well. When or if it is available again, I'll order it.

A re-read. Thus far the H is clueless as to the special person
Jane is. They were hand-fasted & now she's 6 mos. along

I like Brant's books too. They are a little dense but I read the unabridged edition of The Count of Monte Cristo so that doesn't bother me. I thought that was the most romantic book when I was a teenager. Now it seems a little cringy - the Count was a lot older than the young woman in his care.

It’s a big day here in Manchester England.
F A Football Cup Final. Played in London. Manchester City v Manchester United.
Come on CITY/ come on you Blues.🤞🤞
The trains 🚊 have decided to strike. So it’s a 10 hour drive round trip, probably more. The oil protesters are saying they will protest on the motorway or at the match.
We are watching at home, though I will probably miss the first half as I have to take the dog to the vet’s. At least the roads will be quite.

1 the FA cup Final.
2 big horse race meeting at Epsom
3 Elton John Concert
4 Beyoncé Concert
I think they will loose a lot of support if they keep targeting big Events.
Next one will probably when the Glastonbury Festival on.

We Won the Championship Cup and we are playing next week in the UEFA cup final against Inter Milan (Italian team. )so fingers crossed for next week.
My husband blood pressure goes through the roof , when he’s watching City. Mine not far behind 😂😂

The last time it was done, was in 1999 by Manchester United.
United used to call us the noisy neighbour’s. They don’t anymore .
I am reading. A Heart so Wild by Johanna Lindsey , for June , romance across the ages challenge . Native America. I usually like her books. Read a few duds lately.

Year was 1836. She was 30 and he was 25.

I highly recommend retirement, as long as you have some interests and people to be with regularly.
I retired 31 January, moved interstate and know hardly anyone. I am an introvert so I like it, but I'm aware of being a bit too isolated. It's lovely to have the whole week to yourself, but strangely my reading hours have reduced!

ugh!"
I can't believe it's really still celebrated but enjoy the day off BJ. That's the good part.

BJ, I'm in the same shape (isolated), even though I haven't moved. When I retire, I'm going to find at least one activity out of the house. Not sure what that will be yet. I was thinking of perhaps volunteering at the public library if they still have reading programs for children.
Coworkers are not the same as friends where I work, even though a lot of us have known each other for decades. There is a monthly or bimonthly lunch that the retired ones go to - I may give it a try when I retire.
I still have a few long time friends, but most of us are busy, even the ones who have retired. Some of them are helping to care for relatives in bad shape, or don't go out much.

I'm also re-listening to Written in Red, which is an excellent book and audiobook, if you like fantasy. It has these nods to vampire stories like Dracula and fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. On this fictional Earth, humans are not the dominant species.
I've got the whole series - it's one of my favorites. She has other series but they don't appeal to me.

I bought it when you first recommended it. One day I will get to it...

Too many books to remember them all.

Hawaii was just wonderful. Came home so relaxed. And we had a great time with our 2 adult children.
Didn't read over vacation except on the plane. Read the Nancy Bilyeau THE GENEVIEVE PLANCHÉ COLLECTION a captivating historical fiction series with adventure and mystery that was recommended. I especially enjoyed the first one--The Blue. Liked the second book as well but not as much.
We are getting solar panels installed next week if the weather cooperates.
And, it is raining again. I am trying to remember that rain is good. It has just been so gloomy since we got back.
Everyone in Hawaii was so nice. I don't know if that's because they live in a beautiful place or if they are a tourist economy or what. I know I was just happy to go to the beach and be able to swim in the ocean without freezing the way we do here in New England.
Oh, I also read the new Madeline Hunter and think the first book in the series was the best one.

Your trip sounds wonderful. Nice to get a change.
We're still under a bad air warning. I think it's a little better than it was yesterday.

Doesn’t sound good Carol . Do hope the air gets better for you all soon.
I was sat in the garden reading, when one of the the people in a house near us decided to light a fire to burn building rubbish .
Had to fetch washing in that was drying on the line. And come in and shut patio door and window. Smoke was getting on my chest. Bunch of idiot. Third time this week. Neighbour are not happy.
It must be 100 times worse for you Carole.

Shaz, I am so sorry. :( You would think that they would notice at least that you had your washing drying outside.
Roberta2, your trip sounds wonderful.

I bought a lemon. Oh, well, it will continue to be a backup.

The Duchess Society series by Tracy Sumner ."
Looks very interesting. I downloaded it from KU. Thanks. I have a little over a month of KU left, so I'm looking for KU books.
