Sorry I'm so late. I started this one two days ago and completely forgot to update this thread. I just finished and loved it just as much as book one. Here are my thoughts: :)

First quarter - (view spoiler)[I had forgotten just how much I had missed Tripp. I loved being reunited with all these characters and witnessing them grow outside of the prison walls. Kiva still held tightly to her secrets though and overthrowing the Vallentis family was the most prominent one. Her magic started to appear in the form of glowing hands as well, and I can foresee some future scenario where she is unable to hold it inside anymore.

Her reunion with her brothers was rather less warm than the one I had anticipated. She, despite claiming she wants to ruin the royals, seems torn between life with them and life with Jaren. She has bonded with the whole family and they represent a lot of what she herself wishes for - loving siblings and a warm, welcoming mother.

I honestly don't know how I feel about Caldon's character yet. He is a bit of a pain but his tragic past explains some of his actions and there seems to be no malice evident in him.

Damn this family own some serious powers! The underground training scenes were such fun to read about. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[Kiva overheard Jaren both defend her and propose their betrothal, which was sweet but only made her decision of which family to side with all the harder.

Rhess seems sweet and I was glad to see Kiva make another friend, even if it did also mean yet another connection to the palace, especially when the two healers shared such a similar past.

Kiva's visit to her brother's camp exposed how many individuals they had gathered to their cause, but also the anger that divided them. Their once close bond was all but shattered in the face of the upcoming war. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[Kiva got to meet her Grandmother, but their reunion was colder than the one with her siblings. Her three elderly friends were just as grumpy but I wanted to learn more about them and their abilities.

Caldon has really grown on me and seems like such a sweetie. We have seen him more than Jaren in this book as well, which is surprising.

Jaran made the almost fatal mistake of following a tip to infiltrate a rebel gathering. It forced Kiva to think further about which side she was to take and also made Naari suspicious of her potential involvement.

Kiva' siblings arrived at the palace and it made for such tense reading. I had not idea what was going to occur when most of the central characters in this book were gathered together without mostly understanding who each other really was.

The revelation that her family could easily have saved Kiva from the prison was devastating to hear. I fully understand her anger and sorrow at learning this, despite the feeble excuse that their mother thought she would be better protected inside the prison walls than outside of them, with her powers. Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[I didn't anticipate that Rhess was Torell's friend and aligned with her family!! I loved seeing Kiva use her abilities to defeat her captors and save Torell. I hoped Tipp could learn to trust her again after his discovery though! The book closed on such a cliffhanger and I'm gutted that I'll have to wait so long to find out what happens :( (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 4
Alright so I'm kind of scared for this one. I loved the last book SO damn much, it was so good in my opinion, that I'm quite scared that this will let me down lol. I absolutely adore my copy of this book, it's so pretty :') (view spoiler)[Anyway, I'm already loving it. I'm scared of the heartbreak that's definitely coming at some point though. Jaren is so damn cute, and I love his relationship with Kiva. The little chapter from her mother's perspective was also really cool. I can't explain how I'm feeling lol, a mix of crazy excitement and scaredness XD I forgot so many things from the last book!

I love Tipp, I'm so glad to see him again!! And Naari :') Do I feel a romance between Tipp and Oriel coming up? ;) (Don't remember Oriel by the way lmao). This is so good so far. I already hate her sister, but her brother is great. I’m loving this way too much lmao sorry 😂😂

I REALLY hate the sister damn. Tor is great though; why do I feel like he's involved with the princess in some way? The random reference of seeing something in his eyes that looked like he was in the same situation made me think this? Idk. The sister needs to go though ugh bye. (hide spoiler)]

Queen Ariane is being weirdly nice, and if it wasn't for the reminder that she abused Jaren, I would've thought she was a lovely person. Confusing, can't wait to find out her angle. Maybe she wants Jaren to marry someone - anyone? Rhess seems really cool - I wonder if she'll be written towards Caldon, seems like it. I really like him so far lol. Poor guy though, the way he lost his family like that :( I'm also glad of the training; it's really realistic with her puking her guts out and everything. Often in fantasy novels, the main character - who has been locked up or hasn't worked out ever - can do everything within seconds of trying, so I really like this realistic representation.

Ah Mirryn is gay, so she's not dating Kiva's brother then lol. I absolutely adore this crew, they're all so freaking great. I kind of feel like Caldon knows about Kiva's family, he's dropping subtle hints I feel like? Or maybe I'm just reading too much into this lmao. Jaren's magic is intense, it was so cool to see it all in action. Can't freaking wait to see more of Kiva's magic. Jaren is SO CUTE. I’m so scared of her breaking his heart :( The meeting was interesting, I loved how he defended her :’) The new threat definitely seems to be that Navok dude, can’t freaking wait. (hide spoiler)]

A Tipp and Oriel romance would be okay. I am good with their friendship though, they are both pretty young too and that gives Tipp a chance to be more of a normal kid than he ever had. Dont think there was much about Oriel in the last book with him being the youngest sibling of the royal family and all.

I loved Caldon and how he knew about who Kiva really was and the relationship he built with her anyway.
Kiva's sister is a terrible being but that was pretty obvious from the get go. Stabbing her brother and killing the grandmother with her dark magic was just icing on her terribleness.
The fact that Mirryn was with the rebels also was not a surprise to me. There was always something off about her.
I do hope we get a Tor and Kiva reunion in the next one where they can still be family and all that. (hide spoiler)]

I kind of feel like Rhess is a spy for some reason, either for that Navok dude or for her brother and sister, since she said that her adoptive family saved her? I feel like her adoptive family is either the rebel queen and her kids, or the Navok dude.

Took a looooong break, but now I'm back. I really dislike Zuleeka still, even though she sort of apologized; I don't trust her. I do really like Tor though. They mentioned that the family heirloom is the dagger, and since the cover shows a dagger as well, I'm guessing it's going to be really important? Can't wait to see her train her magic. Still scared of the heartbreak that's definitely coming, but I got an ARC for the next book so I'm a little less scared lmao. I really like Flox lol. The family seems so normal, but I thought the queen was so terrible?? I'm so confused man lol. And the king is sick, can't wait to see if Kiva will heal him. (hide spoiler)]

She's slowly seeing that Zuleeka is lying about everything, can't believe she didn't tell her grandma to hide the dagger somewhere else because she literally told her in what book to look, so she's definitely going to steal it. Mirryn is getting more and more odd, she didn't tell anyone that they were trying on dresses and just let everyone assume that Kiva stole the book? That's weird. I'm 10000000% sure Zuleeka had something to do with it, because that stone isn't with the armies at all; they either already have it or it's in the dagger (I'm still guessing the dagger). I'm scared man.

I can't believe Tipp did it, poor guy :( It's so freaking clear that the potion only worked because of the dagger that her grandmother used, why is Kiva being such an idiot in this book?? Alright so this is EXACTLY as I predicted, Rhess her family were indeed the rebels, then she must be the one that Tor is in love with. Oh nooooo now Tipp is going to hate her dammit, I hate this :( Fucking Zuleeka, please die :( Getting close to the end now; I don't get why Kiva isn't asking more questions, there was plenty of time to just get Zuleeka to explain everything to her, and she just parted with Tipp like that?? I'm 100000000000% sure that Zuleeka is about to stab her in the back, I don't get why she's being so stupid.
