The queen is a pretty interesting character. I still can't reconcile the image of her I got from Book#1 (abusive, addicted...) and what I'm seeing here. They seem two totally different persons.

I'm a bit suspicious about Rhess... I can't trust her, I fear she's hiding something and maybe is not an appointed healer at all (a spy for the rebels?)...

I'm reading so slowly... on a one hand it has been a helluva a week, on the other hand I'm scared for the heartbreak that is coming...

(view spoiler)[Overall, my main issue is understanding why Kiva has seconded the rebels' plan for so long. She cares for Jaren and his family, she knows for sure that he will be a great king... hence, as Delora pointed out, what was the point in claiming the throne only on the basis of a supposed blood right?

I hate Zuleeka. She's so mean and cruel. On the other hand, I'm feeling so bad for Tor. He has a big heart and he's another victim of his mother and sister's cruelty.

I didn't expect Cal to know Kiva's identity. tbh, I'm pretty relieved that her secret is (at least) partially out. However, I'm still bracing myself for something terrible to happen.
My guess is that the rebels are working with the northern kingdoms to steal the throne and I fear that the information that Kiva passed to her siblings will play a big role in that... I don't want to see Jaren and Cal (I've become so fond of these two) suffer.

I'm still curious to know what her grandmother is hiding about her ability and the real power of the dagger. (hide spoiler)]

I've read up to Chapter 7

It's obvious Kiva will likely betray her family because the royals turn out to be not so bad people, but now I wonder who ordered her family to be imprisoned to begin with? Could it be someone else? Because they were arrested (and the one brother killed) for merely conversing with a suspected rebel, which is a lot. Unless the crown knew who her mother was? Even so, something doesn't really add up. I guess we'll see. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Okay I guess it was the royals who sent Kiva and her dad to prison and somehow only now someone is pointing out how absurd it was to send a 7 year old to a death prison. Also I keep thinking if Kiva and Jaren just get married they can both rule and everyone's happy. Maybe that's how it'll end, who knows. I feel like the rebels don't have much leg to stand on and maybe they should've attempted to talk this out first. The problem just feels so contrived with needing to choose one when there's a way to make both sides work together. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[So apparently she wasn't supposed to be imprisoned if someone had just come fetch her? But also this is not a widely known enough law that Torell has no idea?? Lol what a messed up system. But her family is also messed up. If I were her I would stop feeling guilty and just betray them to the royals while only trying to spare Torell, honestly. They haven't done a single thing to earn her loyalty. Blood isn't everything.

I can see where this story is going but I like the characters and concept so I don’t mind if it’s a little predictable. (hide spoiler)]

I definitely feel it's predictable too, but there were twists I didn't see coming along the way, which kept me interested.

I'm almost done and it's getting better! The start is really slow for me, but now more things are happening and I'm actually anxious to see how things get resolved.

(view spoiler)[I have to say I got pretty frustrated with Kiva for making dumb decisions all around and how she kept telling all these top secret information to her family even after she knew they deliberately left her to rot in prison for 10 years. She really is the cause for all the mess that's happening right now and it's very hard to feel sorry for her. From the moment Jaren gave her that amulet, I knew it was going to end up in her sister's hands for the climax. Some things are super predictable, but there were other twists I didn't see coming. I still enjoyed it (the death magic is unexpected and interesting), but I wish she'd been at least a fraction smarter about it all. (hide spoiler)]
