Children’s picture book from the late 90s/early 00s, about a kid who makes an ugly teapot as a gift. I can picture the illustration of the ugly pot but can’t for the life of me think of the name of the book

Possibly The Birthday Thing by SuAnn Kiser? The thing he makes is a sort of hybrid teapot / pencil holder as a gift for his mother - it's strange and ugly but she loves it.
