David Pollock | 7 comments I read this in the mid-1960s. It's an illustrated children's book about a boy who visits a forest ranger for a week (or the summer?), and I think the ranger was his uncle though I'm not sure I remember that detail clearly. There is a log cabin, and lots of trees, of course, but I remember little else. This is a long shot, I know, but it's important to me to find this book. Thanks.

I have to find a copy and see to know for sure, but I think that is probably it! Thank you very much.

That's great. Wonder why I didn't see it there from a google search? I guess google doesn't index that archive.

Sadly, it turns out this isn't the book I'm looking for. It's hard to imagine there is more than one book from the same era in which a boy visits an uncle who is a forest ranger, but this is not the book I am remembering. Perhaps I am mixing my memory of this book with something else because some of the things here are familiar. One thing I remember very differently is the illustrations in this one are simpler/cruder than what I remember. I remember them being more colorful as well.

Rainbowheart | 28711 comments Aww, I was so sure that was the one!

Do you remember how many pages long the book was? How old was the boy?

Was it more of a picture book, an easy reader, or a child's novel?

David Pollock | 7 comments You would think so! I'm sure I must be conflating my memory of this book and the one we haven't yet identified. I just cannot imagine that there were two books published around the same time about a boy visiting his forest ranger uncle. But I swear in my memory, the other book is the same scenario. It's possible, though, that this other book was about a boy visiting a forest ranger that wasn't necessarily his uncle. Now that I realize I apparently read both of these, it's impossible to differentiate one from the other in most of these details.

The book in question was, I think, a larger format book and somewhat less text. More color. And the only specific detail I remember was there was one page in which the boy was taking a bath in an outdoor tub or wash basin of some kind in front of the cabin. I remember that because the idea of bathing outside somewhat shocked me at the time!

You asked about the age of the boy, but I really don't remember. Just sort of a generic, elementary age kid of 9 or 10. Something like that.

Don't think so.

Maybe. Certainly closer to the kind of illustration I remember. Wish I could see more of it.
