Olivia I do not remember much about this book but the parts I believe I remember correctly are fairly specific and can hopefully identify the book. I think I read it sometime between 2009-2014.

The book is set in Victorian or some other similar time period in Ireland - I think Dublin. There is a lot of focus on the rules and etiquette surrounding the time. There is a well to do family with a mother that has magical powers as well as two daughters. The mother is planning on attempting a bad or evil ritual that requires a virgin to complete. One of the daughters cannot be used as she is not one so the other daughter must be kept ‘pure’. There is a man who is already interested in the daughter and has started pursuing her. Somehow he knows about this plot of the girls mother and so he tries to take her virtue before the ritual can be performed. This happens in the study or library of the daughters house. They are kissing and he begins to wander his hands up her dress. Before anything else can happen, the mother comes in and stops it.

The only other point I can remember is that the same man attempts to call on the daughter but she is having her period and therefore cannot receive him so he has to be turned away at the door.

I will do my best to add more information when I remember anything else.
