SOLVED. Children's book about boy who befriends a weird old witch. [s]

Hi, I'm trying to remember the name of a book or series of books which I have vague memories of reading in the late 90s, but quite possibly is from the 80s. From my memory it is about a young boy, who becomes friends with a silly, weird, mean-ish, funny older witch who lives next door or nearby to him and owns a cat. I remember a story line involving the boy and the witch going to a jumble sale at the boys school, and another storyline about the witch going on a boat to go on holiday or is moving abroad. Printed in english and read in Australia. Have been searching for this book for years with no luck.
