Valerie (veegood) | 248 comments I've started having flashbacks to the millions of horse/pony books I read as a teen/tween in the mid-eighties. I often remember short passages, horse details, conversations, but rarely character names or book titles.

This particular book had a girl who rode horses, showed them in some way (possibly rodeos?) travelled to shows. In one scene the horse float slips off the tow hitch and is only held by the chains as they're travelling uphill. She tearfully begs the driver of the car behind to drive right up and use his car to stop the trailer from breaking loose and rolling back down the hill, killing the horses inside.

One scene towards the end relates to her thinking over the times she's worn the 'lucky shirt' and things have gone wrong. Previously she'd credited the lucky shirt with saving the situation, but now she reconsiders and decides to put it in the rag bag. This is not a major plot point, I can't really remember what the major plot was, as I read hundreds of this kind of books.

I've just found a couple of 'Horse Book' lists on Goodreads, so I'll look through them and see if I can find it, but perhaps someone here knows it.

Thanks!

Valerie, please unprivate your profile so mods can see the threads you've started. You have 149 comments which makes it extremely difficult to see how many threads you've started.

Part of a series?
Time period/location story takes place?
Did the girl have any family, friends, rivals, etc?

Feel free to post the passages in the book you remember?

Sorry, I didn't even realise it was on private. I think I've fixed it now.

I'm fairly sure it was a stand-alone. I have vague memories of dozens of horsey book-covers, but nothing specific for this book. I read it in the mid-eighties, it was contemporary at the time. Set in the US, but I don't know enough to pinpoint a state or region (I'm in Western Australia). I may have got it from a Scholastic book club, or borrowed it from the library, but I have a feeling I read it more than once so I'm fairly sure I owned it.

The MC was a teen girl who lived with her family, I think the older brother may have been driving the car when the trailer came unhitched. I know she had a horsey friend that she went riding with, the friend pointed out all the times she'd been wearing the lucky shirt when they'd got into trouble.

Great!

Valerie (veegood) | 248 comments OK, I found it. I was wrong about where it occurs in the book, it's right in the middle.

The book is Vicki and the Black Horse

I borrowed it from the Internet Archive and read it, and got very excited as soon as she started talking about her lucky shirt.

Yay, one mystery solved.
