Heidi Senft | 7 comments When I was in junior high (grade 7/8/9?? - around 2009) I read this book about a girl who entered into a cult unknowingly and, I believe, her eventual escape from it. I found it right beside Sarah Dessen books. I think she escaped with someone, through a barbed wire fence that was really high that surrounded the property and it was dangerous for her to try to leave. She came into this community somehow without knowing it was a cult, and she eventually grew suspicious of the whole thing. The leader was trying to marry multiple women, and the rules were beginning to mount up. Perhaps there was something on the outside that was threatening the cult? I can't really remember anything else. Maybe someone here knows what I'm talking about. I've been wondering what this book was for YEARS!

Hannah Kersey | 1 comments This sounds like it might be “The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly” by Stephanie Oakes!!

Rainbowheart | 28803 comments The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly was pubbed in 2015, though, so it can't be that.

Fiction or nonfiction? That should be in your topic header/title.

Heidi Senft | 7 comments I googled at The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly, you're right published in 2015, so it couldn't have been that. And the one I am thinking was a book mainly about life in the cult and life growing increasingly worse and worse within it until deciding to leave. So any books that talk about someone escaping and their life afterwards wouldn't be it.

It must have been fiction if it was close by Sarah Dessen books in the library, but I'm not certain about that either.

I've had more time to mull it over. I'm wondering if the girl willingly chose to enter the cult - drawn to the "society" of it somehow. I recall her being a teenager - 15-17ish perhaps? There may have been some stuff in there when it was getting bad for her about other members having firearms?? Things started to get violent. And I think she was supposed to marry someone about 50 years old.

Just taking a look at the young adult book list... here is one that could be along the right lines? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...

Rainbowheart | 28803 comments Do you think Keep Sweet is the book?

The MC in that didn't join the cult, though. She was raised in it.

message 8: by Heidi (new) - added it

Heidi Senft | 7 comments That's the thing. I don't think that was the book because she was raised in it. But it follows the similar plot of marriage and needing to leave.

message 9: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28803 comments Was it a religious cult, like a Mormon polygamist cult?

message 10: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28803 comments Alis is also about a girl who runs away from a cult because she doesn't want to get married, but she was raised in it.

message 11: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28803 comments Faith Wish and The Passion Flower Massacre also sound kinda similar in that the MCs join cults and then end up leaving.

Heidi Senft | 7 comments Thanks for your searching! Sorry I had not answered prior. The Passion Flower Massacre's general plot sounds somewhat similar, but upon further researching I don't think this is it either.

Something I recall about this book was that it had a green cover that looked somewhat aged and worn, it was a paperback. It may have had a fence on it. And the title may have had the name of the girl who got involved in the cult.

Rainbowheart | 28803 comments Might also check the Cults and Communes in Fiction list.

Camille | 10 comments Was this book set in the 1800s? Told from the perspective of a young girl. Her sister is going to marry the cult leader but he says he needs to sleep with all the girls to see which one will give birth to a new prophet? And then it was super hard to kill him?

Zahra | 1 comments I don't have a name for this book but I think I may have also read this book. I can remember that the cult she was in was caught or found by the authorities and she got re-homed. I can also remembered that when she was still in the cult she would go swimming. There was also a boy she was very close with when she was in the cult and once she left she wanted to find him. These are just some details i remember I hoped this helped.

Eve | 1 comments It could be Seed by Lisa Heathfield? It sounds really similar pilot wise and cover wise. Or maybe the Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams?

message 18: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 28803 comments Seed and The Chosen One for Eve's suggestions.

message 19: by Heidi (new) - added it

Heidi Senft | 7 comments @Zahra! some of the things you said ring a bell for me. I don't remember anything about her swimming, although that could have been. There was definitely a boy she was close with when she was in the cult and I think there was some sort of outside pressure that lead to the collapse of the cult/her getting out of it. I don't remember her being rehomed, but it's possible!

Looks like Seed was published in 2015 which would have been too late. The Chosen One looks more along the right lines, although I didn't think she grew up in the cult. I thought she only entered it when she was 15 or so.
