A Classic of which i think which I read an abridged version of as a child. There was some treasure involved, perhaps gold, the directions to which were written in the Bible.

As far as i remember this was not the part of a series. I read this in the 1990s and i am sure it was before 1998.

Can't recall the period or the location. But i do remember there were kids in the story who had found something in the attic (perhaps) which started the quest. And that the Bible didn't give the location of the fols directly, it gave a cryptic clue like "pure gold survives the fire test" (something along these lines). And I think (I am not sure if I am thinking od the same story or if I am mixing it up with something else) that ultimately they find the gold hidden in the ground at a point where the shadow of a mountain(perhaps) falls at a certain time of the day.

I read this serialised in a children's magazine, so I have no idea what the cover of the original was like
