I'm looking for a book which is the first of a series of books about magicians. The book's cover contained a city hanging in the sky (Polish edition did, but probably not only this one). It's about a young person, who becomes a magician's apprentice. This book was published probably between 1990 and 2010.

Can you remember if the MC was male or female?Do you think the original language was English?
Original language was English I suppose. The MC was male
Oh, and the MC comes to the city not in the first book. The magicians were devided into ordinary and extraordinary. MC also traveled through a forest with some magical creatures.
Sounds almost like Beyond the Deepwoods, except Twig doesn't become a magician.Was the floating city called Sanctaphrax?
