message 1: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4998 comments Hi everyone!

Time to nominate for August is Soul.

~Please remember to state a connection to the theme when you nominate.

~Books we have read less than three years ago are not eligble. To see which books are not eligble, see this google sheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

~ Each person can nominate 1 book.

~ Book must be available both as a physical copy and as an ebook.

~ Authors: Please do not nominate your own book.

~ Please do not nominate books that are part of a series, unless it is the first book.

~ You can second someone else's nomination, but that will count as your nomination.

This thread will be closed by June 26th, and we will choose ten books for the poll. If there are more than ten books nominated, we will choose "seconded" books first. If there is still a tie to get into the top ten, we'll go back to the Goodreads average rating to see which is highest.

Sean (fordest) | 301 comments The soul.... the soul... I could sell my soul... But that sounds dangerous... How about I get my soul saved?... different people would advise different ways to do that. Some would say that Christ could do that. So.... Let's go with:

The Last Temptation of Christ by Nikos Kazantzakis

Audrey (audjvoss12) | 114 comments Psychology is the study of the soul. The word “psyche” translates to soul.
I nominate Maybe You Should Talk to Someone

I'll second The Alchemist! I'd say the link seems to be "But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasure found within." Sounds like a journey of the soul to me!

message 6: by Sue (new)

Sue Butler | 50 comments I'd like to nominate Cloud Atlas Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
Why? - The reincarnation of a soul travels through time in an exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

Another excerpt from the synopsis:
This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and soul-stirring wisdom...

I have owned this book for many years and have yet to read it. I'll second this nomination...

That is a great book!

message 10: by Ilona (new)

Ilona | 4698 comments I'd like to nominate Cracked by Eliza Crewe, the first book in the Soul Eaters trilogy. Link is the name of the series; the protagonist eats souls.

Ahhhh...one of my all-time favorite books!

message 14: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 2389 comments So difficult to decide! I ADORE The Art of Racing in the Rain and would love revisiting it, but I also have owned a copy of The Alchemist for FOREVER...

So I'll second The Alchemist in an attempt to knock another one off my TBR listing!

message 15: by Trisha (new)

Trisha (trishabisen) | 2389 comments I second The Alchemist too - never read this because this was way too hyped and I thought I'd end up not liking it. About time I give this one a try!

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Alekhya wrote: "I second Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed"

I’ve been meaning to read this one, so I’ll throw my vote to this one too.

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) | 628 comments Soul, you say? How about one about what happens to our souls after we die?

I nominate A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore
