On the Amazon reviews someone does mention the word brownie!
"It was going to be hard to study with Bink clattering around. He was the "type of fairy called a brownie" and he was acting out of sorts. He was mad that someone had been doing his work. Brownies got miffed if anyone tried to do their work."

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be it. Thanks though!

For some reason the word "brownies" pops into my head when thinking about this book-- either the creature/fairy or the girl scout level (not the food).
