NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3687 comments So is there some unofficial consensus that today's prompts are supposed to focus on fun or creative topics?

message 1203: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) I'm trying to which one to suggest, Wizard of Oz or Rock Paper Scissors, Lizard Spock?

If anyone gets to the suggestions before me and wants to throw one of those in the ring, feel free!

message 1204: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2941 comments Amy, if I’m on when the suggestion poll is open I’ll nominate or second the rock, paper, scissors or Spock prompt. It has been my favorite idea all year.

Rachel can you share this list or direct me to a link? I tried to search but there were hundreds of songs, which would make it basically a free choice. I didn't think there were that many. I want to see if there is one that gives me a clear compelling topic I can work with.

Love this idea and would totally vote for it! I unapologetically loooove YA, and there are so many options in that genre which are actually well written and great reads for those of us who are now only YA at heart. Ha. (My favorite YA book ever - In Other Lands - would be perfect for this prompt.)

It could be seen as a free choice but I think with a prompt like this, you still have to search for a Disney song that fits the book (or vice versa). There is still a fun aspect to making that connection between the book and a song. This would be one of the few prompts that I wouldn't pick the book first. I'd pick the song (or movie) first just to make it more challenging.

I am currently challenge-less since I finished the Summer Reading Challenge. I am thinking about picking a Disney movie and reading books for each of the songs in that movie. I think that would be fun.

message 1208: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2994 comments Yeah, I would pick a song at the start of the year and stick with it. I don't know that many anyway, so if I don't look up lists of songs it's much less of a freebie!

message 1209: by Marie (new)

Marie | 1066 comments I'm one of the Disney downvoters, for me it's not fun at all. I don't know any of the songs, and there are so many of them, so it just seems massively tedious to search through them all.

I'd rather it was narrower (I can't think of a way to do that, unfortunately), or just take away the Disney connection and have it be a book connected to a song title. Though I think that's been put forward in previous years and not done well.

message 1210: by LindaLH (last edited Aug 12, 2021 08:26AM) (new)

LindaLH | 75 comments "A book related to glass" didn't make it in the first round. The prompt is related to the year 2022, which is the UN International Year of Glass. I was a bit disappointed.

"Glass" could be in the title, on the cover (windows, drinking glass, spectacles, shards of glass), about something generally made of glass, or glass plays a part in the story, eg. Cinderella.

I wonder if the idea would fly if it were reworked, like:
A book related to glass, to mark 2022, the UN International Year of Glass (adds the reason for the prompt)
A book related to the phrase "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." (adds a theme that might be fun? )
A book related to "glass houses" (same as above but less specific?)
Or just resubmit the original prompt?

- this is probably for the next round...

message 1211: by T. (new)

T. Hampton | 104 comments There is a Buzz Lightyear movie due to be released in 2022. Maybe the Disney/Pixar prompt could be reworked and limited to songs from the Toy Story movies. I know, it's not as much fun, but it narrows it down a lot. Just a thought. Personally, I LOVE the Disney suggestion, and would really like to see it make it in.

Oh dear, I would upvote a general Disney prompt, but my Disney experience is more along the lines of Bambi, Snow White, etc... and Frozen. I could do something with Frozen for sure. Fantasia would be interesting with all the classical music.

ok I just got excited about the Disney prompt, so long as the classics in Fantasia are "Disney songs" and the prompt isn't about lyrics. The list:
The Nutcracker Suite
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Rite of Spring
The Pastoral Symphony
Dance of the Hours
Night on Bald Mountain
Ave Maria

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3687 comments Anastasia wrote: "My theme comment was in reply to Nancy J's question about what theme prompts look like. They are not ones I was suggesting, lol."

Thanks Anastasia. It got me thinking. I liked the racism/race-relations prompt this year and I hope we have the same concept this year, perhaps using different words. I like cultural themes in general. Cross-cultural interactions. A "fish out of water" story.

I liked the comfort read prompt, and books that can make you feel something. I don't know this would work as a prompt. "A book that makes you feel something" or "a book with all the feels."

Isolation/loneliness -is a common theme, and it's timely due to covid and tech that makes it easier to avoid people.
"A book with a character facing isolation or loneliness."

Other themes:
Redemption
Forgiveness/letting go
Overcoming challenges
David vs Goliath
Coming of age
Bravery/courage/"feel the fear and do it anyway" stories

message 1214: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments When the Disney prompt was first floated, someone linked to a "What Disney song are you" type of quiz. I took that and got Circle of Life from The Lion King, which I think is a good one. If the prompt ever gets through I'm going to read a retelling of Hamlet, since The Lion King is partly based on that play, but there are a lot of other directions to go with it. I could do Elton John's memoir, since he composed the song, I could do a book related to the circle of life, I could do a book related to lions or the jungle, or where a father dies.

I wonder if the prompt was changed to be, take the quiz, then read a book related to your result? That would narrow it down for people.

message 1215: by Alicia (new)

Alicia | 1490 comments I also got a song I love using the quiz “A Whole New World” from Aladdin.

I’m one that loves the Disney prompt to my core, but I’d worry about limiting it too much. Some may not like toy story or the quiz song that gets picked. Or they may not know anything about the quiz song but feel it would be cheating to take it again (it wouldn’t).

I think it’s a classic scenario of we can’t please everyone with the prompts.

I don't think I would vote for isolation/loneliness. Many people are facing another potential lockdown after already being locked down for over a year already, I really REALLY don't want to read about someone who is alone and lonely while I am well, essentially alone and lonely.

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) I will personally vote for any version of the Disney prompt, but tying the prompt directly to a quiz is probably my least favorite version suggested. I am one that would feel like it's cheating to take the quiz more than once, and when I took the quiz the first time I got 'supercalifragilisticexpialidocius' which really doesn't connect to anything in just the title. (I got some suggestions of how to to connect it to books but those were all using the lyrics or the movie, not the actual title.)

Do you think it would help to narrow it down to 'classic Disney movie'? I think a lot of us who love the prompt would define that as the 90s movies we grew up with, but others could use the early classics, and even 'golden era' Pixar (think John Lassiter era) wouldn't be much of a stretch. That way no one feels the pressure/'freebie'ness of digging through long lists of songs, but most people could still use a song they're likely to have some connection or nostalgia for.

Shannon Ralph | 188 comments I like the idea of loneliness or isolation. Fitting in the time of COVID. I would up-vote that one. Lots of great books would work for that prompt!

As for a book that makes you feel something, ALL books make me feel something, so that might be a bit to broad for me.

Circle of Life is a winner! It makes me think of ecosystems, aging, mortality, wildlife, and leadership succession - all topics I can work with. Most of those topics are actually in the book I'm reading now (Once There Were Wolves). I looked at many titles and lyrics, and I didn't spot anything else I liked better (except for a song from Newsies which is live action). The Toy Story song about friends would be easy to match too.

message 1222: by NancyJ (last edited Aug 12, 2021 10:57AM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3687 comments I won't be taking the quiz. I'd advise against taking online personality related quizzes, even on something as innocuous as Disney songs. Personality type quizzes like this are being used to gather more information to the data profile that gets sold to advertisers. These profiles were used by right wing consultants in the 2016 presidential election, and in the Brexit vote, to figure out the best way to influence voters. They would select different messages, ads, articles or comments to put in your path based on key scores. If you are a conventional orderly type, you would see different messages than someone whose emotional style would make them more responsive to fear inducing messages.

Two fascinating books on the subject:
Targeted: My Inside Story of Cambridge Analytica and How Trump and Facebook Broke Democracy, Mindf*ck: Cambridge Analytica and the Plot to Break America

I know that I should stop taking quizzes about books I read because you can tell a lot about a person by what they read.

I suggested it the first time round and I don't think adding the reason to the prompt does anything other than make it overly wordy. I think a lot of people liked it but it was the first round so there were lots of good options. It's on my list to resubmit but I'm not sure I'd do so in the fun prompts coup poll if we're doing that.

A book related to glass, to mark 2022, the UN International Year of Glass - I like that wording best.

Isolation or loneliness is present in many books to some degree (it's one way an author makes the character more relatable), marketing reps might be afraid to even say the word out loud. :)

I should add connection or friendship to the prompt. Books about loneliness are usually also about making connections or friends. Many have happy or hopeful endings. Literary authors might view it as a realistic part of the human condition, so they won't be as upbeat.

I agree that I it would be hard to preplan an emotional book, though reviews, recommendations, and familiar authors can help. I didn't do much advance planning but I did choose books that could conceivable fit many different prompts.

I also like this prompt in some form. I think it will make for some fun and interesting searching for appropriate books. I really enjoy prompts that can lead to something surprising. I like the prompt: "A book related to glass, to mark 2022, the UN International Year of Glass" because it's also clearly tied to the year.

I agree. I'm hoping that 2022 will mean the end of this stupid pandemic (or is it the pandemic of stupidity?) so I could go for a prompt on the theme of "Resilience" or "Liberation" or something like that.

I would include any extra information like that with your prompt. Maybe even tell us a little about how glass is used now, to help people find connections to their favorite topics. I went to the Corning Glass museum several years ago (the art is gorgeous, and I got to make some things myself). They displayed many ways it's used in the tech/communications industries now. A sample list of books never hurts.

message 1229: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2994 comments This was how it was submitted first time, it had all that info so I'm not sure that was the problem:

A book related to glass

2022 is the UN International Year of Glass.

Could be in the title, on the cover (windows, drinking glass, spectacles, shards of glass), about something generally made of glass, or glass plays a part in the story, eg. Cinderella.

message 1230: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I would put the UN part in the prompt name. People who just vote in the poll without reading anything else wouldn't see the connection.

I like resilience a lot. Having human connections is just one of the ways to build resilience. Resilience plays into the feisty old person and up-lit ideas too. We're starting to see memoirs about people's experiences under lockdown, and I hope we'll get some that are very instructive, and even entertaining.

Up-lit idea too, as well as the Betty White prompt

Bildungsroman is just coming of age, I believe. Pop Sugar did it last year, here's the Listopia

I like up-lit and would vote for that over a book about loneliness. That just sounds depressing, even if it ends up being uplifting.

It's literally just a list I made on Word on my computer, but I'd be happy to share if someone has a suggestion of the most effective way to do that. it also doesn't contain any song titles, just names of movies that I personally felt had enough songs to choose from.

Personally, I don't see the need to reword the prompt to be more limiting. I think anyone can feel free to limit themselves however they want (quiz, classic Disney only, etc.) but I purposely worded it to be left open enough that everyone could find something. Absolutely feel free to choose those kinds of options if you want, but I'd rather leave the wording as is.

message 1250: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2131 comments For what it's worth, 2022 is the 30th anniversary of Aladdin and the 25th of Hercules, so you could also focus on songs from those movies.
