Possibly a fairly long short-story. I read it about 2010. Wealthy man forms a mercenary group to go after criminal organizations. Wealthy man dies at the end in South America when an operation goes bad. The criminal target was killed, but had a dead-mans switch that detonated a nuclear bomb.

It is NOT "The Dark Forest", by Liu Cixin.
