SU 21 10.1 Page Count Questions
Please be aware that short stories on Goodreads need to have been published separately from their magazine/journal or anthology. You may find stories added here that do not belong, and those may be deleted at some unknown future date. To be sure your reading for 10.1 will be on GR when you want to claim the task, we urge you to choose stories that have an ISBN or ASIN on the GR record. If you have questions about a specific entry, please ask in this thread.
One question about “completed up to three times”. Is that just for the bonus or could I read four books of 300-349 pages each claimed as 10.6 as long as I didn’t have more than 3 finisher bonuses?
Mary wrote: "One question about “completed up to three times”. Is that just for the bonus or could I read four books of 300-349 pages each claimed as 10.6 as long as I didn’t have more than 3 finisher bonuses?"No, you can't start a 4th round.
Within the 10.1 short fiction task, do we have to use 2 or 3 different authors or can we read several short stories by one author?
Connie wrote: "Within the 10.1 short fiction task, do we have to use 2 or 3 different authors or can we read several short stories by one author?"For this one task, you may use the same author. Remember, the stories must be published separately. That is, have unique pages on Goodreads, not part of an anthology.

The Curious Case of the Copper Corpse on your shelves, which will count as 27 pages. There is no paperback, so we'll use the Kindle edition.
Also, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at 64 pages.
Or The Wonderful O at 80 pages. Do any of these help?
EDIT: and now I see you already have Night, but at 115 pages, the The Curious Case of the Copper Corpse will work and still be under 150 pages.
Continuing the conversation over here:This is a pdf of The Bus Conductor by E.F. Benson. It is 9 pages.

"two or three short works adding up to 75-150 pages"So... not limited to fiction (short stories) only, right? Also includes NF?
Looking at possibly this collection: Short Blacks

THANKS! Yay for Elizabeth and her skills at finding short stories for challenged RwS members!
Now, how would I use this when posting. The GR link doesn't show number of pages unless I go to the other cover. Should I link and then refer to your post above?
I seem to remember that Lexile is suspended for summer, but I cannot find that announcement to confirm.I want to read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes but it has MPG of Childrens. May I use it?
Valerie wrote: "Now, how would I use this when posting. The GR link doesn't show number of pages unless I go to the other cover. Should I link and then refer to your post above?"You can just link to what comes up in the add book/author link.
Bea wrote: "I seem to remember that Lexile is suspended for summer, but I cannot find that announcement to confirm."Yes, no Lexile this summer.

Deep breath of relief
Tien wrote: "I think you missed my Q in post #11, Elizabeth :)"Ha! How did you know?
Yes, "short works" not short stories. The 2 or 3 is operative - that is a a min/max in number of titles. Length of individual titles can vary widely as long as the total MPE is 150 or fewer pages.
Tien wrote: "Thanks, Elizabeth. I'll have to make sure my 2 or 3 adds to 150 or less pages :)"I thought you probably already got that part, but sometimes I feel as if I have to add stuff, just in case. ;-)
I'm planning on reading A Shine Of Rainbows which does not give a page count on some editions, and others range from 95-122. What page count should I use? I don't know if it qualifies for 10.1 or 10.2. Thanks.

Just want to check to make sure I have the whole MPE thing sorted. Here's my plan for 10.1:We Should All Be Feminists (most popular print edition, I think...) - 48 pages
Graceful Burdens by Roxane Gay - Kindle edition = 21 pages (no print edition)
Halfway to Free by Emma Donoghue - Kindle edition = 27 pages (no print edition)
Total pages = 96 pages
Is that right?

Yay! Thanks! I've been wanting to read all three of these for months now. Great to have an excuse. ;-)

Yes, it works for 10.2 all by itself. There are some titles that don't have a print edition, in which case we will use the most popular digital edition.
For task 10.1, how do the style points work? Do all short works need to meet the style criteria to get the points or just 1? If I read 2 works that both were published before 1996 is that 10 style points or still 5?
Another question - I'd like to use The Purloined Letter for task 10.1 but I'm not sure it works. The MPE appears to be the English edition but the summary is in French. Can I plan to use it or should I look for something else?
Bucket wrote: "Another question - I'd like to use The Purloined Letter for task 10.1 but I'm not sure it works. The MPE appears to be the English edition but the summary is in French. Can I plan t..."
Yes, you may use that book at 48 pages. I fixed the description of that edition and thank you for bringing to our attention. For future reference, it is the language of the edition rather than the language of the description that is the controlling factor for the MPE. (Sorry, I couldn't find a better way to say it, and always ask if you're not sure.)

For the Pre-1996 points, the latest published is the determining factor, so both would have to have been published in 1996 or earlier to get the style.
Thank you Elizabeth! I think I'm running into the same thing again with Americana - looks like the MPE would be 454 pages, not 377 then, right?

You've found another error in the database, but this time the description is in the right language. That edition is a French language edition and I have fixed it.
This edition is the default: Americana at 377 pages. I hope that's what you wanted.
Woohoo! That's exactly what I was hoping! Thank you. :)Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Bucket wrote: "Thank you Elizabeth!

Yes, 2 titles making up the required page length.

Can I use The Complete Persepolis which has 344 pages for task 10.6? Just verifying about graphic novels/memoirs.
June wrote: "Can I use The Complete Persepolis which has 344 pages for task 10.6? Just verifying about graphic novels/memoirs."Yes! All Lexiles and Graphic novels allowed this season. (And so glad to see you again this season, June.)
Thanks Elizabeth. I am glad to be back. This is summer season was the chill welcome back I didn't know I needed.

The MPE for Murder in the Mews seems to be an audio CD. Should I use the most popular printed edition to determine the page count? Thank you!
Bryony wrote: "The MPE for Murder in the Mews seems to be an audio CD. Should I use the most popular printed edition to determine the page count? Thank you!"You should use Murder in the Mews.
When we say MPE, we mean the most popular English language print edition, not large print. When a book does not have a print edition, only then will we use the most popular digital edition for page count. If there is only an audio edition, please ask, as that depends on total hours to make 100 pages for our regular tasks.
See our FAQ.
Thanks Elizabeth. I think this is the first time I’ve seen an audio CD with more ratings than any other edition and I wasn’t sure what the rule was.
Is there a site where you can double-check page numbers? I was thinking of reading The Sittaford Mystery and I can't believe it is 400 pages. That book is as short as most of Christie's - the edition I have is less than 200 pages - small print, but still, I would expect it to be in the 250-300 range max. Or should I just take whatever Goodreads says?

Read books of varying length written by different authors:
10.1 two or three short works adding up to 75-150 pages*
10.2 100-149 p
10.3 150-199p
10.4 200-249p
10.5 250-299p
10.6 300-349p
10.7 350-399p
10.8 400-449p
10.9 450-499p
10.10 500p or more
(*please see additional information/discussion regarding short stories in post 2 of the help thread.).
Remember that we will be using the MPE to determine page counts. However, page counts on GR can be corrected/edited, as quite often these come from a publishers estimate rather than actual page counts. You can lock in the displayed MPE page count for your plan by posting in advance. Additionally, if you suspect the displayed page count is in error, you are always welcome to post in the librarian help thread to have it corrected. Your moderators will not be checking your plans in advance of your posting for the task, but, should there be a discrepancy at time of posting, the librarian logs can confirm that your post for the task is valid.
Each book claimed for Page Count must be written by a different author.
Books may be read in any order, but the number of pages should be connected to the assigned task (i.e. 330 page book should be claimed as 10.6 and 212 page book claimed as 10.4, regardless of order read.)
Scoring:
10.1-10.10 10 points each
Completion Bonus: 100 points
Repeats
Page Count can be completed up to three times.
