Helga - welcome - you are officially registered on Checkpoint One. I am going through the registrations and the checkpoint threads as quickly as possible.

Everything is perfect - just circle back to your Checkpoint One post and add that you did not complete any books in this time segment.

Well done - I am giving everybody time to do this since I am still going through Checkpoint One.

Make sure to proceed to Checkpoint Two if you haven't already and answer the same template.

Welcome Ben - how are things in Chicago? You are officially registered for the readathon and Checkpoint One.

Everything is perfect. I think you have this down - you are doing things very well - plug in your template - answer as much as you can and then circle back before the end time for this of any one of the seven checkpoints - very efficient.

I am giving everybody some extra time to circle back and update - it is 12:04 PM where you are so you should be proceeding to Checkpoint Two. Same drill but circle back here and fill in the end page number, the amount of time you actually read in this segment, and whether you finished any books in this segment and of course cite them if you did otherwise just add the following verbiage - no books completed.

So proceed to Checkpoint Two if you have not done so already and add the details missed to your post above on Checkpoint One.

Terrific Ben.

Folks I am slow but going through everybody's one by one. Takes a bit more time the first time through for the first readathon - so I am giving everybody extra time to circle back. Most important thing is not to wait for me - just jot down your stats - the template remains the same and answer all the questions for each checkpoint - For those on the East Coast and EST - you should have proceeded to Checkpoint Two. Same template. Proceed to the next template based upon your local time and answer all of the same questions each and every time.

I am giving everybody personalized attention.

Hello Teri (from Texas) - you are officially registered for the Readathon and Checkpoint One - hopefully by now you have proceeded to checkin on Checkpoint Two - same drill and same questions.

Let me go through your post and see if there is anything to be added or updated. I am giving everybody extra time so no worries.

I have looked over your posting and you are brilliant Teri - absolute perfection - so now do the same thing on all of the other Checkpoints - you only have to do a copy and paste of the template and fill in the blanks.

Great Job.

Hello Donna from Reading, Pennsylvania - hello and welcome to the Readathon - you are officially registered and you have completed Checkpoint One - You did a beautiful job with the template - only one minor omission. Always indicate if you finished any books. - if the answer is no - simply add no books completed - and if you did complete any books say yes - completed this book by this author - with citation.

Everything else is A-OK and I am giving everybody time to circle back and update their posts since this is the first time through for all of us. Proceed to Checkpoint Two if you haven't already.

Great job.

Update: Potential big problem _ Donna I went to also place a copy of the above note on the readathon list and you are not listed - you need to join the challenge - go to the Readathon challenge and sign up - and then set up your shelf and you should show on the list - this sign up is done the same way you sign up for any of the challenges - India, Middle East or Japan if you signed up for them

It is going to be a major problem for you if you do not straighten this out right now because your completed books are not going to show for this readathon or any of the others for the year.

So let us find out what is wrong.

Attention Donna - you need to take care of this right away:

How To Join In:
Click on the title at the top - The HBC Readathons. Please then join by simply signing in at the bottom and say how many books you plan to read for one or more of the readathon dates - there will be six readathon dates throughout the year; then create your own personal shelf to add the books which you would like to tackle during one readathon or more readathons. That is all there is to it and goodreads will keep track. Become your own marathoner in reading books on the readathon dates and we will keep track of your progress in terms of titles of books, number of books, number of pages, and different genres. Give it a whirl and see how much reading you can get done and take a stab at that big "to be read" pile of books that we all have.

Note: Don't forget to set up your shelf first and then add the name of that shelf here when setting up the challenge for your readathon.

And here are some links to the Readathon folder which will be updated:

Hello Erin - welcome to you Erin from beautiful upstate New York. You are officially registered and you have successfully completed Checkpoint One. If you have not already proceeded to Checkpoint Two - make sure to do so and complete the template and respond to the questions the same way.

I will review your input here on Checkpoint One and I am giving everyone enough time to circle back and add what is missing because this is our first time through.

First the citation needs to be corrected and you can circle back and do that and of course we will help you. You got two out of three elements so you did very well.

Here is what it should look like: (you left off the link at the end - the third element)

The Life and Letters of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley by Florence A. Marshall by Mary Shelley Mary Shelley

You have the genre completed and the page numbers (start and finish) that is good - but you have not told me how much time out of the segment's 4 hour time frame you actually spent reading - that needs to be added.

You have your general location and timezone and you alluded to the fact that you were close to finishing the book - but you need to add no books completed if you did not finish one in a segment and if you did you must say yes a book was completed and add the citation.

Remember these are the questions for every checkpoint.

Skeeter - a good rule of thumb is to post the template right away on the yet to be completed check point and fill out what you can - leaving the remainder for you to come back in a half hour before the end of the time segment to finish it up. You get to be pretty efficient that way with the template.

Looks like everything is 100% to me.

Francie - perfection - I hope you have proceeded to Checkpoint Two - same questions - same drill.

Welcome to the Readathon - you are officially registered and you have successfully completed Checkpoint ONE.

Update to Francie:

Francie- one major problem is that your completed book is not showing up on the shelf - you have joined because you have this thread - but have you set up your readathon shelf here and have you saved your completed book to it. You must also have stated that your book is now read and put in a completion date. Please keep working on this until your completed book shows up on this screen on the shelf at top.

This is critically important in being able to get credit for completed books not only on this readathon but on all of the readathons throughout the year.

You need to be able to see your completed books.

Welcome Claire from the state of Washington (the Evergreen State) - we are delighted to have you. I have registered you for the Readathon but you have to go back to the Challenge area and sign up so that you can track your progress for the entire year including this first readathon. I will post instructions here and if you have any trouble we all can help get you signed up. But that needs to be done first.

When you do join you have to select the number of books you will think that you will do for the readathons and you have to name your readathon shelf. Once you do that you will show up on a long list of readathon attendees. You will have your own thread and shelf where you can see your completed books and I can interact with you and give you tips or let you know what you need to do next. The shelf will track your progress so make sure you sign up in the proper location.

Here are some instructions:

Go to the HBC Readathon area on the main page. You will see a Readathon section in the Challenge area and you will see the clickable title The History Book Club Readathons - that is the title that you will click on. On the next screen just scroll down through the Readathon verbiage and you will see the sign up area at the bottom of that text.

How To Join In:
Click on the title at the top - The History Book Club Readathons. That will take you to the Readathon screen.

And here are some links to the Readathon folder which will be updated:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

=================================

You did an excellent job with the template and citation - bravo. Now all you have to do is to sign up on the challenge area so that you show up on the readathon list and make sure that you have set up your readathon shelf - the screen will ask you to name it. And then you save what you did. Your name then should show up on the Readathon list and when you complete any books for the marathon they should be displayed. However, remember when you save the completed book that you move it from the to be read shelf to your completed readathon shelf and enter the date when you completed the book. If you do all of the above you should see your shelf.

One thing that you need to add to your post on Checkpoint One is whether or not you completed any books in this checkpoint segment. If you did - say yes I completed a book in this segment and cite it. If you did not simply add no books completed.

Since this is everybody's first readathon and It is taking me a bit longer because everybody is new at it and getting their feet wet and sometimes I have to stop to help folks get on track - like getting you signed up properly - so there are no worries about you taking the time and going back to edit. I am giving that time to folks so that they can get everything set up easily and learn the ropes.

You are doing great - just get signed in.

Gle wrote: "Bentley, I'm off to work so I may not get much more reading in today, but I want to thank you for all your assistance and attention to each of us. You're appreciated. Please know that!"

Thanks Gle - just go to the next checkpoint which coincides with your local time and do the template for that checkpoint if you want to do more reading and get more done.

However remember tomorrow after 8AM go to Checkpoint Seven and set up the same template but do your tallies - how many books read, cite them all, how many books completed with citations, if none say none, how many pages total read, how much time did you spend total, how many checkpoints did you complete, etc. You have from 8AM until Noontime to complete the Check Out process and that thread is called Check Out - Checkpoint Seven. That is mandatory to complete the check out. It is very easy and then you will have completed the first History Book Club Readathon. We have more dates coming up this year. and you are already signed up by signing up for this one. So if you want to participate you are good to go. Right now just concentrate on checking out after 8AM tomorrow (February 8th) - delighted to have you with us.

Hello Chris from California (the Golden State) - you are officially registered as part of the Readathon and I have OK'd you for successful completion of Checkpoint One.

However I would like you to go back to your post and edit it and add some more information which is on the template we are using, There are no worries about taking the time to go back and edit your post on Checkpoint One - we realize that this is the first time through for folks doing the Readathon and there is a lot to do to make sure that everybody understands the template so that we can tally everything up properly by the end of the readathon and through the year. This will be a lot of fun.

Here is a copy of the template - this template needs to be filled out for every Check In check point. The questions and the information asked for is always the same.

Here is the template:

Name of Book and Author or books and authors:

Genre or genres:

Number of Pages Read - Start Page and Finish Page for this four hour period.

Don't forget the proper citation - just do the best you can and we will assist you.

How much time did you read during this block of time:

Also, your location in the world and timezone

Did you complete any books during this time frame and what were they?

Now what did you have missing that I would like you to go back and add:

First - very good try on your citation - you only have one portion missing.

Let me show you how it should look:

Middlemarch by George Eliot by George Eliot George Eliot

Just keep trying and in no time you will get it right - book cover, author's photo and always the author's link.

You were only missing the author's link.

You have the start and the end times and the number of pages which is great. But you do not cite your general location and timezone which is part of the template and also must be added.

It will make it a lot easier and faster for you if you just copy and paste the template and add the information as you enter it.

I also do not see the information requested about whether or not any books were completed. If they were completed - just say yes a book was completed and cite it.

If you did not finish any book during the checkpoint - then simply say no books completed.

Additionally you did not add the genre - that also must be added. Remember just following the template is going to make things so much easier for you. You will be astounded.

So just take the time to go back to your post on Checkpoint One and do an edit and add the necessary missing template information - there are no worries here - this is the first time that we are doing a readathon so it is going to take a little time to get used to what should be posted so it makes things easier. I will always post a template or a sample to make things easier for you and everyone. So always look for that.

I think you are making great progress and you should now proceed to the Checkpoint Two if you haven't already or a further Checkpoint based upon your local time which must be around 2:37PM on February 7th.

Have fun and I will go through each checkpoint and give you pointers and spur you on. I think you are making good progress and I hope you are enjoying your book. I have given everyone extra time to go back and do the edits. It will make it so much easier for all of us in the long run.

Good Job Chris.

Keres - brilliant - you followed the template - great you have all of the necessary information. A special welcome to you - you are from the state of Washington (the Evergreen state)

The only thing that I think you should practice and edit is the citation.

The citation is the book cover, the author's photo when available and always the author's link. If the author's photo is missing we simply add the words (no photo) in parens at the end.

Here is the way your citation should look:

Ancillary Justice (Imperial Radch, #1) by Ann Leckie by Ann Leckie Ann Leckie

When you have a chance try to edit the citation and fix it. We are here to help you and we are giving folks extra time to do some of these edits so as to get everybody on track and help them out.

You are doing great.

It is only 3:14PM in the afternoon where you are in the state of Washington - so you should have proceeded already to Checkpoint Two which you should be on until 4PM and then you should go on to Checkpoint Three - use exactly the same template and answer exactly the same questions just keep updating the answers. Hello Marc,

Welcome to the Readathon Marc you are from Colorado (the Centennial State) - you have officially registered for the readathon and you have completed Checkpoint One.

It is 4:24PM in Denver so you should have just completed Checkpoint Two and moved on to post on Checkpoint Three - I am still working through one post after another to get everybody on track.

Marc - each check in is time sensitive - so make sure that you go to the Check in segment each time that coincides with your local time.

Then just answer the questions on the template. Each time you update the template and post it in the next Checkpoint - it should show and demonstrate your progress.

Now let us look at what you have posted and I will see if I can give you some tips and maybe you need to do a couple of edits on the Checkpoint One thread but no worries - we are giving everybody time to catch up and fix anything. It is the first time we are all doing this so it takes time for folks to get used to the process.

The template is key - if you use the template you never forget anything because you simply answer the questions and update your progress.

First the citation needs an edit when you get a chance.

Remember the citation is first the book cover, then the author's photo and finally the author's link.

Science Under Siege The Politician's War on Nature and Truth by Todd Wilkinson by Todd Wilkinson (no photo)

In this instance there was no author's photo - so simply add (no photo) at the end.

You are close enough on the genre. You have the start and finish pages and you have told me how much time you actually spent on reading. Hope you enjoyed both the book and the movie (smile)

You have both your location and your timezone and you answered the question accurately about where you are in the book. So well done.

Claire, I still do not see you added to the Challenge segment - you have to keep trying.

All, the key to doing this fast is to use and reuse the template - do an edit and a copy and paste and just update showing your progress. It makes things a lot easier and you do not forget key info.

I am taking the dog out for a quick walk and then I will begin checking Checkpoint Two. Folks just keep moving along through the checkpoints that coincide with what time it is where you are - and make sure to use the template!

Thank you Masooma but since we have completed this readathon - proceed to Check Out and place tallies there.

Micaylah (micaylah-michelle) Business Stripped Bare Adventures of a Global Entrepreneur by Richard Branson

I am struggling through this as, firstly it is not usually my genre of reading; and secondly, I have much going on in my life medically right now. Appointments and tests and more appointments.

I am somewhat upset as I was so far ahead of myself last year. Since reading has only come back to me in the last year I really want to do so, but this year it seems my time is not my own.

I am on page 50. The first book I picked up to read did not interest me after all, so I started over in January.

Hello Micaylah - I am sorry that you are having problems with your book.

But the February 7th/8th readathon is over.

But you can continue to read on and get credit for the book on your 2015 Books Read Challenge.

You can participate in the next readathon on April 18th. But please read on and get credit for the book elsewhere on some of our other challenges.

Thank you. It was a little confusing and I think I thought the 2 were the same. I am waiting for 2 history books, one an accounting of Napoleons Exile on St Helena, and because I am interested in Theology and old books; THEOLOGY JESUIT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA, FOUNDER OF SOCIETY OF JESUS, SERMONS written in 1712 (YAY me at winning it!)

Will these book count? Am I getting this right?

A confused
Micaylah

Micaylah - you are totally confused. It will not count on the readathon unless you read it on the next readathon on April 18th 8AM until April 19th at 8AM.

It is very easy - if you want a book to count that you read on February 7th (anytime from 8AM until the next day at 8AM on February 8th - then you needed to fill out this template and tell me about the books themselves. There are 6 check in threads which are check in - checkpoints every 4 hours and if you are reading within any of those four hour blocks you would post the following information in a template on the check in checkpoint itself and you would get credit. I have to say Micaylah that if you read the instructions on each thread and do what it tells you to do and use the template it tells you to use - it is extremely easy. The same goes for the CHECK OUT TEMPLATE which is Checkpoint Seven - the ONLY CHECK OUT THREAD there is.

Here is the template you would use on any and all of the check in checkpoints - ONE THROUGH SIX

Let us know the following:

Name of Book and Author or books and authors:

Genre or genres:

Number of Pages Read - Start Page and Finish Page for this four hour period.

Don't forget the proper citation - just do the best you can and we will assist you.

How much time did you read during this block of time:

Also, your location in the world and timezone

Did you complete any books during this time frame and what were they?

So on any of the six check in threads - your check in would look like this:

1. You would cite your book that you are reading and the author

The Jewel in the Crown (The Raj Quartet, #1) by Paul Scott by Paul Scott Paul Scott

2. You would cite the genre:

Historical Fiction

3. You would cite how many pages you read in this four hour period

Let us say that you read from 1 to 50

50 pages

4. You would then answer how much of the four period you actually read of the four hour period.

So let us say you read for only one hour from 8AM to Noon.

1 hour

5. Location and Timezone

In my case - it is Metro New York and Eastern Standard Time

Metro New York: EST

6. Did you finish the book (yes or no)

No

So this what a check in post would like - all together: and this is the kind of post you would post on any of the Check IN threads - One, Two, Three, Four, Five and Six

The Jewel in the Crown (The Raj Quartet, #1) by Paul Scott by Paul Scott Paul Scott
Genre: Historical Fiction
Pages Read: 50
Time Reading: 1 hour
Location/Timezone: Metro New York: EST
No I did not finish the book

The above is not the Check OUT - on the check out thread (CHECK POINT SEVEN) - you have to give the tallies and the citations for all of the books you read. And I posted that template on your thread Micaylah.

Here is what I posted to you:

Here is a helpful note that I am sending to everyone (just changing the name): - this way folks have a template at their disposal when they do check outs in the future and if they have not done their Check Out for this readathon - this template is a good one to use now:

I have included the link in the note to the Check Out thread:

Thank you Micaylah G - have you done your tallies and checked out? All readathon participants must check out. Here is what Simon did for his checkout and I think this is a pretty compact way of doing your tallies if you have not already done them. This is the MANDATORY CHECK OUT THREAD.

This is the link for this thread:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I replicated his post here:

The Nixon Defense What He Knew and When He Knew It by John W. Dean by John W. Dean John W. Dean

Final Tally - 105 pages (all books)
Total Time Reading 2.45 hours
Total Checkpoints Utilized - 2 Checkpoints and One Checkout
Genres: Non fiction and Politics
Total Number of Books Competed - 0
Total Number of Books in Progress - 1
Location: UK, GMT

You can see from THE above that the tallies have to be done in the CHECK OUT THREAD

Final Tally: (all of the pages you read in all of the books during the 24 hour readathon)

Total Reading Time: (all of the time you actually spent reading during the 24 hour readathon period)

Total Checkpoints Utilized: (how many of the six checkpoints did you make and also add to it the mandatory checkout - so if you hit 3 checkpoints and also checked out - you would put 4

Genres: (all of the various genres of all of the books read during the readathon)

Total Number of Books Completed: (how many books did you complete during the readathon) - the answer is either yes or no - if yes do a full citation

Total Number of Books in Progress: (how many books did you read any pages from during the readathon) - make sure to do a full citations of all of these.

Location: (Location and Timezone you are in)

Micaylah you seem to be having a hard time - remember always read what the first post in the thread says for you to do - and then follow the directions of the template.

One last thing to do Micaylah - do not post titles of books without full citations - and neither of these books counts.

You can read them for your 2015 50 Books Read challenge but not for the readathon. The Readathon is over.

The next opportunity you have for another readathon is April 18th. That is when the next readathon is scheduled.
