30.6 - Aprilleigh’s Task: Calling All Ailurophiles

This can be either a two-book task or a one-book task. No books with MPG Childrens.

I’ve been a cat lover my whole life, and have shared my life with at least six of the inscrutable furballs since college: Amanda, Cashmere, Fluffy, Gypsy, Moxie, and Pepper.

Required: Post the option chosen and the names used for each book.

Two-book option:
No minimum page requirement for this option, and one of your two books can be a graphic novel.

Book 1: Using the above image, select any two intersecting names and read a book that contains all of those letters (the shared letter only counts once) in the title (no subtitles) and author’s name. Multiple authors are acceptable, but only one author name may be used.
For example, CASHMERE and PEPPER require only one R because they share that letter, but still require three Ps and four Es.
Ex. CASHMERE and PEPPER: The Disappearance of Billy Moore by Aaron Paul Lazar

Book 2: Select another two intersecting names. You can re-use one name but not both. Read a book that contains all of those letters (the shared letter only counts once) in the title (no subtitles) and author’s name. Multiple authors are acceptable, but only one author name may be used.
For example, if you chose CASHMERE and PEPPER you may still choose GYPSY and PEPPER.
Ex. GYPSY and PEPPER: Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson

One-book option:
No graphic novels for this option, and your book must be at least 500 pages.

Choose any three intersecting names and read a book that includes all of those letters (as above, shared letters count once) in any combination of title, subtitle, and author’s name. Multiple authors are acceptable, but only one author name may be used.
Note: This means one of your names must cross both of the other two names.
Ex. AMANDA, CASHMERE, and PEPPER: Deep-Sky Companions: The Caldwell Objects by Stephen James O'Meara

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments The image doesn't show up consistently for me in the app, so here's a list of workable intersecting names (shared letters are lowercase).

Two-book option:
aMANDA - CaSHMERE
CASHMErE - PEPPEr
FLUFFy - GYPSy
GYpSY - PEPpER
MOXIe - PePPER

One-book option:

CASHMErE - PEPpEr - GYpSY
CASHMErE - PePPEr - MOXIe
FLUFFy - GYpSy - PEPpER
GYpSY - PePpER - MOXIe

Correct, but you can include the subtitle for the one-book option as that's a lot of letters.

message 7: by Robin P (last edited May 17, 2021 07:53AM) (new)

Robin P | 1610 comments At first I was confused - I thought that every letter in the title has to be in the intersecting words - The title below has the letter "y" which doesn't appear in the words

AMANDA, CASHMERE, and PEPPER: Deep-Sky Companions: The Caldwell Objects by Stephen James O'Meara

But it seems it's the other way around. The title has to contain all the letters in the intersecting words but can also contain other letters. Also, although there are multiple A's and P's in the word, the title only has to have one of each letter.

Can you confirm that is correct? Thanks!

Partly correct. You can have any letter in the alphabet as long as you also have all the required letters, but you may need more than one of some of them. Eliminate a single occurrence of any shared letter because it only appears once in the diagram.

For example, CASHMERE and PEPPER only require a single R because they share that letter in diagram, but they still require 4 Es and 3 Ps.

Very nice! And since the top paperback edition is over 500 pages, Kindle Unlimited and Amazon Prime members can take advantage of the free kindle version for those programs.

Fly (fly-me-to-the-moo) | 890 comments in case someone needs it, Miracles and Conundrums of the Secondary Planets contains Pepper, Cashmere, and Amanda. It doesn't have the page count to use for the one-book option, but it's a short read and only $0.99 on kindle

message 15: by Julia (new)

Julia (julia103) | 2719 comments I had From the Charred Remains by Susanna Calkins on my TBR list (works for CASHMERE and AMANDA), but got really frustrated trying to find a second book.

Finally found The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick which seems to work for CASHMERE and PEPPER.

Is it ok to use one of your names/words intact in the title?

message 16: by Margie (last edited May 20, 2021 04:42PM) (new)

Margie | 271 comments Love your kitty names!! I've lived with Disney, Barney, Louie and Sisu.

Given up trying to find a one-book option over 500 pages :)

If anyone is looking for ideas, I found these two which are a mini-series, and both available on Kindle Unlimited UK.

We Borrow the Earth: An Intimate Portrait of the Gypsy Shamanic Tradition and Culture
by Patrick Jasper Lee
320 pages
contains AMANDA, CASHMERE, GYPSY and PEPPER

COMING HOME TO THE TREES: Travelling with the Gypsy Spirit of the Past
by Patrick Jasper Lee
228 pages
contains CASHMERE, GYPSY and PEPPER
This one is Kindle only on GR, but have submitted to librarians to add paperback.

Wow, four names is impressive!

One option I found while I was looking for examples was Edgar Allan Poe's complete works - any edition that includes the words THE, COMPLETE, and POEMS would work as long as the page count is high enough (shouldn't be a problem, these tend to rather fat volumes).

message 19: by Robin P (last edited May 20, 2021 07:41PM) (new)

Robin P | 1610 comments Here's a way to look at 2 at a time - You need all the letters but I eliminated a lot of titles by figuring out what I thought would be the hardest letters for each combination:

For CASHMERE & AMANDA - you need 3 A's, 2 M's and 2E's

For CASHMERE & PEPPER - you need 3 P's and 4 E's

For PEPPER & MOXIE - you need 3 P's, 2 E's and an X

For FLUFFY & GYPSY - you need 3 F's and 2 Y's

For GYPSY & PEPPER - you need 3 P's and 2 Y's

It helps if your author has a long name

I did find on my shelves The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection by Alexander McCall Smith for PEPPER & MOXIE

and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon for CASHMERE & AMANDA

Works for Cashmere, Amanda, Pepper, and Moxie

Cashmere and Amanda are in his name alone

message 21: by Aprilleigh (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments It's been brought to my attention that my response to Margo in message 18 implied that the use of subtitles was okay for the two-book option. That is not the case.

Both books mentioned in post 16 are ineligible for this task. Both are too short for the one-book option, and neither works for the two-book option without the subtitle (excluded for the two-book option).

My response was not intended as approval of either title. I wasn't asked to verify them so I didn't - I was merely impressed that she found four names in a book even though it wasn't long enough for the one-book option.

I'm sorry, Margo. I should have looked at your titles even though you didn't specifically ask me to. I only included subtitles for the one-book option because I wanted it to be difficult, but still doable.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3941 comments I found this really hard too - so for anyone struggling these are my two option

Anatomy of a Disappearance by Hisham Matar

Cashmere and Manda in title and author name

The Peppermint Tea Chronicles by Alexander McCall Smith

Cashmere and Peppe in Title alone I believe - there are many of his books with wordy titles that might fit

I didn't even bother looking for a one book option but if you are I think your best bet for these are longer Non fiction works

I'm not really sure what to say about this one. The record is a mess and needs to be cleaned up because the subtitle is both incomplete and does not match the cover image. The subtitle as written works, and all of the editions that have page numbers clearly meet the minimum, but the subtitle shown on the actual cover of the linked edition does not work (no Ps).

I'll need to ask the moderators for some guidance here. It doesn't seem in the spirit of the task to have a book qualify because of a error in creating the record.

That said, there are editions with a complete subtitle that matches the cover and works for the task.

If you think that's bad, take a look at the title page LOL

full title: My Story of the War: A Woman's Narrative of Four Years Personal Experience as Nurse in the Union Army, and in Relief Work at Home, in Hospitals, Camps, and at the Front, During the War of the Rebellion with Anecdotes, Pathetic Incidents, and Thrilling Reminiscences portraying the Lights and Shadows of Hospital Life and the Sanitary Service of the War
😂
If the narrative is anywhere near as wordy as the title, this one is a hard nope from me!

message 39: by Aprilleigh (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments Oh, I’ve seen worse. This is fairly common with classics. The book will work, but the risk is that it may be corrected before it can be read and claimed. Best to find an edition without this issue if you can, or be aware of the risk and have an alternative task for it if necessary. There are several editions with the complete title and matching cover that could be used if you can locate them.
