H is new in town. H dates heroine. He gets into a fight to help a friend and one of the boys get killed. He feels guilty and leaves town without saying goodbye to h. Heroine goes to college (different country maybe?) , and finds him with new girlfriend. His friends are part of a local rock band. It's a two part novel and lots of flashback. Hero tries to win her back. I believe something happens to heroine's sister and she blames herself.
