What I remember:
The plot is about a girl who moves to a new home next to a hill/barrow that is rumored to belong to elves/fairies/fey people. At some point she is kidnapped and forced to live underground with the fey people, who seem like elves (but may not have been elves). I distinctly remember a scene where they force her to fall until she is able to fall gracefully and finally walks like them, rather than walking like a human.
Spoiler alert:
After living underground for some time, she manages to escape.
I have no idea if this is helpful or not, but I seem to recall it being on the same shelf as Tamora Pierce. So maybe an author with last name N-S? But could definitely be remembering wrong as it was a long time ago!
