Conversation With A Loco Assassin about life, death and the right way to look at the world

At one point in the novel, one of the characters is having a conversation with one of the insane/disturbing antagonists. The subject of their conversation turns into a moral debate in which the antagonist attempts to break the secondary character. We get to see his thought process however and it seems the antagonist was hoping for someone to challenge his world view. Is that the case? Or am I reading too much into it.
