Nancy Fessler | 6 comments A story was written about 25 years ago about a passport con artist and a woman who fell in love with him. It took place somewhere in the Middle East I believe. I think the name of the story is Scorpion or The Scorpion, but I can't find it.

I believe that the name of the book that I am searching for is called either Scorpion or The Scorpion. I read this book about 25 years ago. It is a true story, set in the Middle East, I believe, perhaps Egypt. It's about this very accomplished con artist and ladies man. A woman was traveling in a Middle Eastern country with a man who was either her fiancee or maybe they were newlyweds. This couple met a man, the con artist, and they spent some time with this man. The woman fell in love with the con artist and left her traveling companion for this man. She soon got deeply involved in his illegal activities, one being passport fraud. She was eventually arrested and spent a portion of her life in a foreign prison. The con artist was not arrested.

You're welcome.

How does the con artist describe himself (e.g., home country, job, rich, widower/single)?

Sarah Heartsdale (sarahheartsdale) | 59 comments This sounds a lot like the book On the Trail of the Serpent, first published in 1979. The recent netflix series "The Serpent" ist based on this book.

Here's the Google Books preview of On the Trail of the Serpent: The Life and Crimes of Charles Sobhraj (1979) by Richard Neville - Sarah's suggestion:

https://books.google.com/books?id=Rm2... There are different cover images.

As I recall, he presented himself as someone you could see yourself hanging out with. He presented himself as a guy with a sense of humor, helpful, friendly, and complimentary. At least to this particular woman in the story, as she left her boyfriend and they may have even been engaged, for this foreigner.

It does sound similar, but I don't believe that he was a murderer. The women in the story that he seduced, helped him forge passports. She was eventually imprisoned for those crimes and probably others and he was not. I don't remember him killing anyone.
