Jgrace | 3953 comments I love short stories just as much as I like the big fat books. And there are so many good choices!

Classic mysteries: Sherlock Holmes; the original Conan Doyle and all of the spinoffs like The Whole Art of Detection: Lost Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes. And there are multiple collections of Poirot and Miss Marple short stories.

Classic Scifi: The Martian Chronicles was good but I liked The Illustrated Man better. I, Robot may be Asimov's most famous collection, but I agree with Anna about his Tales of the Black Widowers.

Alice Hoffman two good short story collections that I enjoyed:
The Red Garden and Blackbird House

Jgrace | 3953 comments I gave 5 stars to Anthony Doerr's Memory Wall and 4 stars to his earlier collection The Shell Collector

Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks was fun, especially as an author read the audiobook.

I like books of connected short stories like The Tsar of Love and Techno. I think People of the Book and And the Mountains Echoed are great choices for that kind of book.

I might finish Seven Gothic Tales which I started this month, but Dinesen is long winded. So far I'm at 2 of 7 and I'm not inspired to go back to it.

I have several collections on the dusty book shelves. I'll have to see what I'm in the mood for.

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I feel like we had this tag recently- I remember it was December, and I read Nine Stories. Maybe it was 2018?

I think I'll be going with Broken by Jenny Lawson.

I didn't check the month, but we have done "short story".

I'm hoping to jump in as soon as possible after the month thread is opened to ask anyone who is shelving their own books to use
"short stories"
(this month's tag), not "short story" (the previous one used.

ETA: Just checked. It was December 2016. (Time moves fast! LOL!)

Kimber (kimberwolf) | 845 comments I'm very happy with the short stories tag! I've discovered some good collections in the past few years and have a new appreciation for them. I'm planning for sure on reading these in May:

I Hold a Wolf by the Ears
Interpreter of Maladies

And these also interest me - I'll read them if there is time:
Mothers, Tell Your Daughters: Stories
A Swim in a Pond in the Rain: In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life
Zombies Vs. Unicorns
Wait for Signs: Twelve Longmire Stories

Top Recommendations for short story collections I really loved reading this past year:
Sooner or Later Everything Falls Into the Sea
We Live in Water
Exhalation: Stories

And a couple of great books of related or interconnected stories;
A Visit from the Goon Squad
The Summer Book

For Japan I picked up a book with the classic story Rashomon (it has another title .... In the Grove). I might find out more about the well known " Rashomon Effect"

Rashōmon and Seventeen Other Stories

I loved Lahiri's previous book, so I think that's a great choice.

Good to know! If I can't get Memory Wall I'll look for his other book. I think I have a copy somewhere of And the Mountains Echoed. It's one of the many on my tbr that I didn't tag short stories.

Hebah (quietdissident) | 675 comments Sometimes I periodically go through my hoard of checked out library books and take back things I'm not getting to. Yesterday I was going to take back The Modern Fae's Guide to Surviving Humanity until I remembered we'd be doing short stories in May.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Sorry for the delayed response on this, but Charlie Ravioli asked a few days ago if the 150 page minimum length will apply to the short stories this month.

The admins have been hashing it out behind the scenes and here is our guidance --

In the spirit of short stories this month, any book length goes! So long as it is actually listed as a book here on GR, that works for us!

The 150 page minimum will still apply to Fly the PBT Skies.

Karin | 9248 comments It turns out I have a book of shorts stories here already, for my personal demographics challenge. It took me several tries before I found a book to start last night, because another one I have out has something for Pursue it right near the beginning, so it's another one to re-start tomorrow, and it was a complete surprise since I wasn't even looking for it.

Before I even started How the García Girls Lost Their Accents I was looking at stuff near the front and saw that some of these stories had appeared before, so I just looked and it's been shelved short stories 39 times already.

The Pursue It! books are different (unless that other book has something I don't know about since I set it aside).
