Magic was prominent, however I think depending on social rank, it was either praised or shunned. The nobles were often taught how to use it, while orphans and street children were shunned and tossed aside.
There were also attributes that people with magic were assigned to. It seemed to be a naturally occurring thing, like it normally happens and isn't induced. I'm not sure how many there were. I remember: Fire, Light, Dark/Shadow, Earth, Air, Water, Illusion. I think Dark was a bad omen, and was very rare. People with illusion magic were typically thieves.
There was group of rebels, composed of kids, some of which had powers, while some hadn't developed them yet. One of the male characters had Illusion magic, one of the female characters had Light magic. Another girl developed Earth magic later in the story. One of the characters, I think it was the protagonist, was trapped in a tower/dungeon, where they developed their powers. I believe it ended up being Dark/Shadow.
The protagonist was also an orphan. I believe their parents had died or been killed. I think her father had illusion magic.
