A long time ago, I just clicked on “follow all discussions in the group” instead of for each individual thread. It works for me, if I don’t wait too long to check (the notification tab on the app only shows the most recent 30). It is only slightly overwhelming at the end of the month when there’s a lot of changeover.
At least this way, I see when new threads get started and I don’t have to remember to follow any one particular thing. You can opt into all on any thread and if there’s anything you decide you really can’t be bothered with you can unfollow that particular thread.
As I said, it works for me, but may not be for everyone.

* (and follow?) It's been a while since I bothered to look at these and I don't remember.

GROUP ANNOUNCEMENT.
If you have noticed that you are not receiving notifications of posts on your group threads, that is a new design by Goodreads. It applies to all of your groups, and all of your reviews. To get these notifications again, or to be sure you still get them, check the "notify me when people comment" box under *every* review you want to follow and on all the group threads you want to follow. Otherwise you won't be sure of being notified of comments.
Thanks for telling me about this thread, Anna.

Please send your issue details to GR support. It's likely that the more they hear from us, the more examples they see, the sooner we will get a fix. It's worth a try
Here is the link to report a GR issue:

The last time I reported this the back and forth I had with GR support went on for weeks. In the end I got nothing useful from them.
I don't have the time or patience for this anymore.
It's so frustrating, we feel your pain. If you decide to ditch GR, we would love to see you on The Story Graph, which is new, but seems to be a growing book lover community with this club preserved on it!

I mostly switched to The Story Graph for book and challenge management a couple of years ago and am enjoying that experience. It looks like their book club support is still in the early stages but they seem to be committed to improving it. I'm planning to spend more time there in the future.
I find going to the COMMUNITY - DISCUSSIONS tab is better than notifications. It lets you follow all the threads without the glitches of notifications.

I just joined Story Graph, but couldn't find your book club. Clues?
Thanks.

I didn't have any problems! The process wasn't instantaneous, but it worked really well.

(A new thread might be coming, I don't know, but for now it's still the place for all things TSG.)
I haven't received a single notification in over two days now. What is the problem this time with GR notifications?

First the mod thing. If in any group you look at the group homepage (or list of mods) and see one of the mods with a "last active" date, but you know they've been on GR since that date, they've got this issue. It doesn't affect their mod status but it makes it look as though they're inactive, which isn't great for a mod.
For regular users, you can see the "last active" date on their profile. So you can look at your own GR profile, and if you see a "last active" date that is not "this month", it means you have this issue.
The biggest problem for all users is that when you have this issue, it seems to stop all notifications from GR. So it makes sense to check for this if you're having problems with notifs.
As for how to fix it? Log out of GR on *all devices* and log back in. This is probably not a problem for those people who always log in/out for each session, but more so for people like me who are always logged in on several devices. I don't know and have no patience to find out, but I *think* it might be related to the "keep me logged in" cycle, because it seems to happen every few months for me.
I hope this helps!
(For example, both Economondos and CJ, who say above that they're having notif issues, have a past "last active" date on their profiles, so try this!)

I didn’t actually sign out on my desktop, just on my iPhone and iPad and that did the trick.

yYu need to select "Notify me when people comment" on every thread to recieve notifications now.
If you want to follow everything a group does, it may be more effective to go to the COMMUNITY tab and select DISCUSSIONS rather than rely on notifications.

Yeah, same for me. And it's hard to keep updated."
I really enjoyed those author emails.
